Just got home from dropping both kids off at college where we were eating on the road for 3 days. Been hectic since this officially makes us empty nesters. Time to be more disciplined with logging my calls and keeping the requisite deficit to reach my 170 goal. I was 178 in Feb when I fell while running and separated my shoulder and chipped my collar bone. No resistance training since then but have continued to run. Start PT for shoulder tomorrow and will hopefully be adding the resistance training calorie burn back into the equation. .

I ran 12 miles non-stop (NEW PR!... average pace 13.35), then walked the next 1.1 miles in 24 minutes, to complete my first half marathon in 3:07:10 ... but I can't check off this block completely because I wanted to run it completely... had I been able to finish the last mile at my regular pace it would have been a sub 3 hour time... something to shoot for when I DO finally run one completely... maybe I will sign up for one officially so I can at least get a medal and run across a finish line!

My son and I completed a 10 mile milestone run last night in 2 hours 8 minutes! (8 miles was our previous longest run). About a 12:45 min/mile average pace. After a brief thunderstorm that evening the temp dropped from 91 to 82 degrees, but it was still very humid. At 6 miles my right patella started to ache a little; at 7 miles I was ready to quit; at 8 we were passing within ¼ mile of the house and I really wanted to make the turn home, but my boy said "let's just get to the end of this road and that will put us at 9 miles, which is still a personal best for us both". By then, ankles, calves and knees in both legs were feeling aches. Lungs were fine with heart rate around 140. I looked ¼ mile down the road to the first intersection. "I can make it to there" I thought. At that intersection, I set my sights on the next intersection... and so on, and before I knew it, I was at 9 miles and making the turnaround to run home. By then, it was easy to say "I might as well run 1 more mile back, then walk ¼ mile home. Got home, drank 2 bottles of water and gingerly waded into the pool to cool my body down and stretch. Climbed out of the pool 10 minutes later and felt like I weighed 300 lbs! Rest day today!

After carb-ing up Saturday night in preps for a long run on Sunday morning... I had a failure to launch (I hit the snooze bar and went back to sleep). Did make it to church, then out to Mexican for lunch (more carbs), then home for a quick nap before what I hoped would be a late run at 7 PM. Unfortunately, my 20 year old son (and running partner while home from college) had friends over for even more carbs (pizza... I did not partake), I surmised that there would be no run... so I ate a honey sandwich (more carbs). An hour later my son announces "let's run!" Still feeling bloated from my sandwich, I grudgingly gear up and head out the door but announced "I'll be lucky to make 2 or 3 miles." 30 minutes in and my stomach bloat was gone, and I was making mental observations that my 6'-2", 190 lb athlete son has the same gait he had as a chubby 12 year old trying to run his first mile. I got lost in the run... sometimes we would run side by side, and others I would fall in behind him and try to match his faster pace. In the end, we had extended our run 3 times, finally finishing at 8 miles... did not see that coming when I left the house. Proof that running is a mental game as much as it is physical. STill, it was a good thing that I was carbed up!
