I'm irritable and feeling out of shape. I got spacers put in my molars for orthodontic braces this week. My teeth hurt and it's affecting the foods I can eat, it makes me nervous about gaining weight until I figure it out. My vegetable salads with quinoa and meat are out, and I'm really missing my crunchy raw vegetables. I was told to eat soft foods like pasta, but holy cow, a small serving of pasta won't satiate me unless it's loaded with vegetables. I'll get my head around it, but if anyone has suggestions, I'd love to hear them.

I've also transitioned into fall by exercising less after work. Even at work, things have slowed so I'm only getting 10,000 steps. But it's getting cold out, and dark, so I'm not motivated to move. I feel less energetic too. I'm in a slump.

Last night I ate deep and delicious chocolate cake, not good. I wanted the frozen cooling sensation for tooth pain, and it was soft so it didn't hurt to eat. But I ate the whole cake by the end of the night, agggghhhhhh.

How do you get over the seasonal slump? I don't know when I can get to a gym, I'm sleeping a little later in the morning, and tired after work and tend to read and stimulate my intellectual side better after work. I'm thinking I'll have to do it between 6am and 6:30 am, before I get ready for the day. Let's hope the daylight savings time changes let me get up earlier to fit in 25 minutes of aerobic activity.

Ohh sorry about the pain... Not sure what to do about the slump. I take vitamin D and maybe some ginger. Maybe it helps. Does not hurt. Do you do smoothies. I love those with protein powder and whatever.

It's funny you mentioned Vitamin D, as I picked some up last week and some wild alaskan fish oil pills for heart health. I love my veggies, I might just have to soften them by stir frying them. And eggs sound good too. I'm full of self pity today, lol, I got my flu shot and feel like I'm fighting something. I'll try and sleep it off tonight.

I do XFIT to get my workouts in and most gyms that offer it have flexible schedules.I like to go at 4 or 5 right after work or if Im on 3-11 I go at 7 9 or 10 depending how tired I am.Class is intense and challenges all parts of the body approx 50 minutes. Worth a try

blog I read talked about eating warm foods as it gets colder - it was an acupuncturist blog. Squash, stews, etc instead of the raw cold foods.

anHello Orly Girl: I totally sympathize with your low energy as the daylight gets shorter in the autumn. You may have Seasonal Affective Disorder, which is often shortened to SAD. It is a tendency to have lethargy, hunger, weight gain, and low mood during winter and is much more prevalent in the northern latitudes and Scandinavia, than in the tropics. It is feeling as if you want to hibernate. With respect to eating while your teeth hurt, consider making smoothies from fruit and yogurt, or from cooked veggies with a bit of liquid and maybe low fat sour cream. Soups and broth are a great idea, and simply drinking 3/4 cup of low salt broth before the dinner meal has been shown to promote weight loss. Things like the miso soup that are commonly served in Japanese restaurants can be helpful. If you have noticed that you typically feel down, and sluggish during the winter, you may want to invest in a Seasonal Affective Disorder light, which you sit in front of (while reading or eating breakfast) each morning for 30 to 45 min, not looking directly at the light. This will improve your mood after about 3 to 6 days, and you continue daily with the light from about late October to March, and you may get through the winter months with increased motivation, energy and well-being. You could talk to your doctor about this, or a mental health counsellor. I bought my SAD light about 8 years ago, and although it cost $300. originally, it has been wonderful, and keeps working, doesn't need any maintenance. It has been a very good investment,

Hi Grandmel, yes I think you're on to something. It get's bad in the fall with the sudden cold, cloudy days, and darkening days. I'm good in winter, though as it's mainly sunny and the light reflects off the snow and I've adapted. But I hate fall, with bare tree's and rain. I just have to ride it out and try and get more sleep at night as I'm a 5 hr. a night girl but always hope for 7 hours as the days darken.

That sucks! I’m glad I don’t have that problem. Keep trying at your diet though. I know you can do it.

Not sure where you live but I take 3000 - 4000 vitamin D in the winter and vitamin B injections to help with energy.
