LOOKING FOR ADVICE:

Hi everyone. My name is Bethany and I am new to this site and am loving it. Any advice is welcome. I have a lot of health issues and some of my diagnoses effect my weight. I am actively working with my team of doctors and specialists to help my health issues and maintain a healthy lifestyle. This includes losing weight. Anyone who can recommend anything to me I would very much appreciate.

My concerns, questions, etc…

- Protein/weight loss shakes: what’s your favorite? What’s the best out there? What should I stay away from? Good/Bad Brands? Most filling and most flavorful? Best/Worst ingredients to look out for?

- Exercise: Best ways to introduce expertise into my routine? What’s your routine? Online workout videos, groups, people, trainers, etc…? Ways to make exercising fun? Exercise tips & tricks?

-Food: Best high protein foods, snacks, drinks, & more? Low carb ideas? Recipes recommendations? Good ways to get more fiber? Healthy Brands? Advice on what foods, snacks, brands, etc to Avoid?

Anything you can help with or want to share with me, I would be most grateful. I’ve got some great ideas of my own and would love to chat and swap recipes, tips, advice, struggles, and more. I’m looking to make new friends on this site as well. Although I am not new to dieting and weigh loss I am always open to any and all information from those who are willing to share their ideas with me. I am so happy I stumbled onto this site and found a community of amazing people who are going on a similar journey as I am to keep healthy, be healthy, and most importantly feel happy. Thanks to everyone. Hope everyone is having an amazing day. Also let me know if anyone wants to chat, be friends, needs help or advice as well. 😊

Thanks so much. That’s exactly what I’m doing is looking around, reading posts, looking into groups and challenges, and more. I appreciate it.

First off, I'm glad to hear that you've already been to the doctor's office for labwork and tests. Before taking anyone's advice, always measure it against what your docs have advised. Are you diabetic? High LDL cholesterol? High blood pressure? Kidney or liver issues? Are you disabled in any way that makes activity painful? Do you have any Way of Eating (WOE) restrictions, like no pork, no shellfish, no meat? And finally, can you get your spouse/SO and family on board to help you, or do you live alone? Are you working from home, or do you go onsite with co-workers? Lifestyle and a support system is an important factor.

Welcome aboard! This is a place for people just like you! We are all working toward a more healthy lifestyle! To answer just a couple of your questions: Advise - LOG EVERYTHING! You have to use your calorie count as a basis for your journey. Even if you exceed your RDI (Recommended Daily Intake), you need to see what the calories AND macros are for future decision making for yourself! FYI - mine is 1500 and I go over almost every day.... (sigh) Protein shakes - I like the Pure Protein. I have used several other brands lately because I can't find the Pure Problem on the shelf at the store where I normally have found it (maybe a shipping problem). Mostly, they are all pretty good (Quest, Premier Protein, Equate) but I am looking for the most protein and the least calories. Pure Protein has 140 calories and 30g of protein. The ones I have now are the Premier Protein - they have also 30g of protein, but 160 calories.... so.... Anyway, I hope you have a supportive and warm experience here at FatSecret! Now you are family! 💪 💯 🌞 🌝 🌎 🫶

You put time and effort into asking questions. Yes, there is a lot to learn about how to live our best life. For your physical health there are wonderful YouTube videos. Just three to start with are Dr. Eric Berg, Dr. Sten Ekberg, and Dr. Jason Fung. You say feeling happy is the most important thing to you. Happy is from what "happens" to you. Not everything that happens to you in life is going to be wonderful. One can have a measure of joy and peace in spite of hard things "happening" to you. In fact, there are hard things happening in this world, and perhaps or even probably our nation is going into a time of trouble. I find in my life, my relationship with the Lord is of the utmost importance. You also say to let you know if anyone needs help or advice. I need help finding the discipline to eat less carbs. And I cannot find it within myself to give away more of my clothes than I am doing now. Since I often wear 5 different sizes within one year with my yo-yo dieting that means I have a reason to keep the many hand-me-downs and thrift store purchases but I have accumulated too many. I cling to them for my hobby of sewing and artistic expression, but I am too possessive of them. I use them (in place of) to fullfill my desire for other things that I can't have. Welcome to FatSecret.

Wow. What amazing people and support, as well as advice. To each of you, thank you for such a warm welcome. Thanks for the tips and sharing what’s works and doesn’t work for you. To respond back to some of the comments, I say; - you are so right to always talk and communicate with my doctors before making changes to my lifestyle, and that’s exactly what I do. I have an upcoming appt with a gastro specialist who is known as the gastro guru in the medical community. And an upcoming appt with a gastro dietician. Both of them I’m sure will help me to keep on with my health goals and help me monitor, keep up with, as well as maintain my symptoms and health. - I’m also a protein shake drinker as it helps to drink these with my gastro disorder and appreciate the brands shared and what to look for in terms of calories and protein. - I’m new to this type of tracking system and am starting to get a handle on the basic nutritional labels and info and how to apply this to my diet, however I am actively learning about macros, how to calculate them, find out how it all applies and such. As well as learning about the rid, what it is, what to do about it, etc… - I have an amazing support system with my mother and boyfriend who help me a lot. I’m getting back into food prep as well. - I find the hardest thing about a lot of this though is how to buy what I need on government assistance. Being on disability my basic needs are met. So currently I have a lot of things in motion to get my shakes as a prescription since it’s directly related to my health. My drs and I working to find the best brand because they file that specifically with the insurance who fills the order and deliver it to my house. It’s hard to buy things that are healthy even without government assistance and being on disability doesn’t leave much leftover monthly to buy organic, buy shakes, etc… but I have hope that God will get me where I need to be with all that - in terms of the specific subject from snowwhite100 comment, thank you for the specific YouTube information. I can’t wait to look those up. I so appreciate the uplifting inspirational comments you made regarding happiness and fulfillment. With the carb intake, I’m going to look into that, follow your profile and send you what information and tips I have that might help. And then we can also chat about your clothes as well. I totally understand how that can be difficult. I’m so there with you. We all have vices Anyways, again I so appreciate the warm welcome, amazing support, positivity, as well as all of your ideas, tips, and more. I shall follow each of you and I hope to chat more in the future. Thanks again. 😊

Good questions. I like protein shakes and use them to supplement my protein from meat, eggs, and "whole food" sources. I have up to an ounce of a protein powder a day either as a drink or sometimes baked into stuff. Exercise: do what you can, start gentle, and focus on resistance training. My primary forms of physical activity are lifting heavy weights and walking. I dance sometimes. Most people make the mistake of doing something really hard to sustain (running at 5 AM) but that's really not necessary unless you love running and waking up early and plan to do it as part of your eventual maintenance. Maybe for now just track your steps and increase your average daily steps by 1000 every week. 10000-15000 tends to be good for fat loss, assuming your diet is pretty good - it allows you to cut less food.

The best STARTING point advice I could give is simple. It's the traditional, cals in vs, cals out Use this app and to input your present Cals in for a week. Then from there add better food choices and remove the bad ones.Get food ideas one at a time and try them until you find all the foods you're comfortable wirh and enjoy. Do it slowly so you do not get burnt out.I currently consume 2100 to 2300 cal 250+ carbs and 200+ grams of protein and with a little exercise the lbs literally melt off. Best cardio, an exercise bike its low impact and easy. That's what works for me

I don’t follow FS for weight loss but just to help me monitor my nutritional choices. I have helped many people over the years on their weight loss journeys and have determined that eating real food only less of it really works. Our bodies just don’t seem to recognize liquids as food. We need that chewing process to activate our digestive system. I believe in portion control, moderation, healthier choices most of the time and less healthy choices once in a while. If you have medical issues and are being treated by a team that includes a dietician I would really stick with what they tell you. If your health conditions allow, increasing activity is really important not only to aid weight loss but for general overall physical health and also mental health.. best of luck on this lifetime adventure. Also, remove the word diet from your vocabulary. That is not what you are doing. You are permanently changing your lifestyle to become healthier.

Hi! I don't know what type of health issues you have, but when it comes to exercise I have crohns disease, so my joints are mega inflamed constantly and therefore my knees are ALWAYS hurting. My favorite exercise to turn to that is easy enough for me is going to the pool. I can do laps, slow or fast. I can run in water/jumping jacks in water and all while having very little resistance on my joints. And adding resistance in water you actually exercise alot more of your body if you run in water instead of running on land. But i've been told over and over that it's 80% what you put in your body, and 20% what you exercise. So if you focus on getting your CICO right and then incorporate exercises as you're to, even if it's months down the line then you'll be doing fine.

i am not an expert on any of this but as far as shakes are concerned I am sure you cannot go wrong with any of the main brands on the market...they are pretty similar...but they are not magic and it is about what you eat or do not eat in addition to them. I hope you can get some support for buying them. Reducing food and eating "fresh" some of the time and some variety is what may help you in the long run. As for exercise... anything you can do and enjoy doing and will do HELPS... If you like dancing then dance... and good exercise videos on youtube as well that can meet you where you are in your fitness right now. Sounds like you fit right in with the rest of us... improving some every day

I have both psych and physical limitations, and my medication side effect is weight gain. Quite a "battle" and fatsecret is helping me through. Wonderful feedback. I do use walking around the side of a big health club pool for exercise. Plus housework. I have been on 3 different "diets" and they all have worked quite well (til I got tired of them), but I am still a "slow loser". I eat my 5% Fage plain Greek yogurt daily with sugar free Torani vanilla syrup. I eat my veggies daily. Sometime alone and sometimes in a recipe. After a month I am working on balancing the rest of my foods on what will work for me. Look over the GREAT suggestions above and use what works for you. I love the suggestions, and certainly am glad you asked those questions as it will help me. Welcome and enjoy fatsecret. It doesn't get any better than here. xox all, Louise Sugarplum_

Good luck on your journey! As far as shakes go, be a label reader; some are actually weight gainer recipes. Don’t accept a shake you don’t enjoy simply because it meets your nutritional goals, either. There are tasty shakes that mix well available. If you are sensitive to any of the sweeteners be sure to look out for those. Many manufacturers use multiple sweeteners in one product, and they will be scattered throughout the ingredients list.

Welcome! You've come to the right place! Looking forward to cheering you on. Many here give amazing advice. I myself don't feel confident enough to give advice to anyone since I feel like I have no idea what I'm doing 90% of the time 🤣
