Ate too much yesterday! Was waiting for the train in a snowstorm, feeling cold and hungry and miserable and ended up eating both fiber and antioxidant bars in my briefcase.

Have been thinking about the things I read on the forum and wonder why people are so sensitive, and so defensive of being fat. Some don't even like the word fat and use "big", "large", "overweight", etc. Now the last time I looked up the Oxford English dictionary, the word fat is not derogatory. Someone who is 6'6" and 280lbs is large, someone who is 5' and 280lbs is fat. I got fatter over the last few years, not bigger or larger, because what I gained from eating too much and not working out enough is fat, not muscle, and certainly not height!

In most cases, in order to solve a problem, one must admit there is a problem. Skirting around the issue is not going to help.

The second thing that puzzles me very much is why we blame the media for giving us twisted body image and we blame the fast food industry for "making" us fat. Don't get me wrong, I am not particularly fond of the media and I have an immense dislike for the fast food industry, but I believe people need to take more responsibility for their own health.

When you see an immaculately decorated room in an Architectural Digest ad, you don't feel shame and rush home and hire a decorator. When you see a beautifully decorated cake in a Saveur ad, you don't feel shame and start taking a course in cake decorating. Then why blame that thin model on Vogue for making you feel bad about your body and your urge to starve yourself?

Same with the fast food industry. Nobody is forcing you to eat their food. Until people start becoming more responsible for their own actions, and grow thicker skin and not be so afraid of reality being throw at their face, the obesity epidemic in this country will just become worse and worse.

Agree! But some people are more easily taken in by media, etc and have similar friends that back them up so it's easy to stay in the slump. As for the terminology some people need a more positive vocabulary, because it's what works for them. We are all different. This is why we need strong friends that will tell us like it is as well as 'soft' friend to have that shoulder to cry on. Both can be supportive in their own way. Staying away from media and wishy washy people can go a long way I think, and if changing one's vocabulary and finding like minded people helps - I try to respect that. I tend to be upfront, but sometimes I have buck up and respect my friends who don't like that, I simple keep my mouth shut and they usually realize I don't agree with them on something, but it's not hurtful.

To put it quite simply, and to use as little exclaimation points as possible (which I'm guilty of over-using), I would just like to say that this is one of the best journals I have ever read. I've tried to make this very same argument with people before, and just got shot down. It's great to know that there's someone else out there who's sensible! I never understood why people would think that fast food is to blame--have they no concience or self control? Just because there's an "extra large" size available and you have the option to "supersize" a meal, doesn't mean you should do it! To the fat people who've gotten to where they are, you did that to yourself. You had the chance to stop back when you were only "over weight" but chose to keep going until you were considered "obese" or even "morbidly obese."
