So many things happening. It's been a while since I last posted here, so let me try think of what's new...

1. I'm getting really strong. Not compared to anyone else, just compared to what I thought would and would not be possible for ME to achieve in 2019. I've been going to the Crossfit box 5 to 6 times a week, crushing the workouts and seeing great strength gains. You guys, after 2 months back in the box after a 4 month injury break, I did dumbbell snatches and floor presses (similar to bench press, but with a dumbbell and only 1 arm at a time) with a 10kg dumbbell and I swear it felt too easy. My previous self couldn't press a 10kg dumbbell at all, my left arm simply couldn't do it. So Yay!

2. I'm still trying to figure this food thing out. Frustrated with constant arguing with the husband about commitment, I decided that the only thing that'll work for him is probably IIFYM and tracking. He got on the bandwagon and started tracking, although without a scale to track our bodily changes, we're guessing calories and macros. I've clearly gained weight, but is it due to muscle gain? Fat gain? I just don't know.

3. An extension of this food thing... My skin and gut hate me. I'm clearly disrespecting my body's preferences in some form or manner. Permanent bloating and the return of the ugliest acne is getting me downnnnnn

4. I am experimenting with quitting coffee. I've had some heart flutters and palpitations, random racing heart rate for some time now. Calming tablets (prescription anxiety meds for as-and-when use) have no effect so I ruled out stress. Today is day 3 sans-coffee

5. Totally unrelated, I'm considering chopping all my hair off, to make working out easier. I'm a low maintenance kind of lady, and all this trouble with keeping hair clean and out of the way is the bane of my existence. But I also do want mermaid hair. Hah.

6. All things considered, I'm holding out for the new year to get my thyroid thoroughly tested (medical aid issues). There is that small part of me that suspects it may be acting up. I find that I fit the bill for most of the symptoms of a slow thyroid. Then again, I'd be stoked to find out it's normal!!

Hmmm... Yep, that's about it. For now. I'll check in again sometime in the future 😂

Could you be low on potassium and/or magnesium? Since you are super active. You are depleting those essential minerals. That can cause heart palpitations. Try getting a supplement of those two minerals and see how you feel. Or add some no salt/potassium chloride to your drinking water. Just a small pinch to each glass or use it over your food. Be careful with it. As it should enter your blood stream slowly and you only need about a teaspoon a day. Spread out. Easiest is just getting the supplement tablet or get an electrolyte powder. A bit pricey. But your body will thank you.

You can also google foods high in those minerals and then add them into your diet. Depends what type of diet/lifestyle you follow.

Oh my word! Yes! Thank you for bringing that up. I'm actually kicking myself for not thinking of that sooner 😅 Maybe my body is just begging for some electrolyte love after all

hey :) I had a similar issue to you in terms of gut health and increased acne when I was doing CrossFit with a high level of intensity. It is such an epic way to get fit because it is fun and part of a community! So it turned out for me that it was adding an additional layer of stress to my body (naturally because that it part of strength and conditioning training) which was causing my acne and gut to act up. What helped me was increasing the amount of sleep that I was getting, taking a good omega 3 supplement and increasing my rest/active recovery days to 2 or 3 per week. Of course it could be different causes for you, but thought I'd share my experience because it took me months to figure it out.

I also have experienced the awful acne! I tried supplementing and it is the only thing that worked. Try to look at acne mapping to figure out a cause. It helped me

You're welcome. What made me realise it was when I had tests done and my cortisol levels were severely elevated. My Doctor's summary was that I was "a very health stressed person" 😄. So maybe consider having cortisol tested when you get your thyroid checked👍

@hhobson.za - how are you treating high cortisone levels? Thanks :)

@Jodi I changed a few things: 1. I had a highly stressful job which didn't help so I have since changed that. 2. I am being more deliberate about getting good sleep (black out curtains, routine, no screens an hour before bed, etc). 3. I cut back on strength training or anything that is heavy on the joints to 3 times a week max and rather do stretching, Pilates, or basically body weight or cardio workouts outdoors on the other days (what is called active recovery). This has helped massively. As a side note, I've also started taking this awesome supplement called Hair + Energy from JS Health (a great product from Cape Town) which is supposed to help with hair and nail growth (which it truly does - wow!) but has also provided an energy boost. ( Core components are iodine and zinc which also helps with thyroid)

Very interesting @hhobson.za... thank you sounds like you are definitely on the right path and I salute you ! I need to slow down myself I think. . . Will look into Hair & Energy supplement too 😊
