Day 1 musings...

I am so great at solving puzzles and problems; yet, I cannot focus on solving my own. I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in March 2018. I was really focused at first. I lost 50 lbs. and my numbers were good. Then, I fell off the wagon.

See, I have to lose weight. I have to overhaul my diet. I have to watch my cholesterol intake. I have to quit smoking. I have to become more active. All of these "have to" mandates have the rebel inside of me clawing at my skin to break out. I have always done what I wanted. Now, my body is betraying me. I have to do what my body wants...and I do not want to.

My hope is this will provide the catharsis necessary to actually listen to my body. If not, the recipes look promising...

Go to Examine.com to get peer-reviewed scientific info on how fat loss works. It is totally dependant on your energy intake. Avoid Dr. Oz type Doctors like Fung who have nothing but anecdotes and hypotheses. The science is out there and totally free. No need to spend money on books. You can do it!

And, you need protein! Consume protein at the rate of 0.8-1.0g per kilogram (2.2 pounds) of your IDEAL body weight (goal weight 170 lbs. divided by 2.2 equals 77.28kg, so ~62-77g of protein per day (248-308 calories worth of food). It's okay to err a little on the high side with protein. [CONTINUED]

Finally, the balance of your daily calories will come from GOOD FAT. This will surprise you: fatty meats (skin-on chicken, 80-20% hamburger, steak), fatty fish (salmon, tuna, mackerel), shellfish (crab, shrimp, scallops), real full-fat cheese (not "American" -- that's a "cheese food"), whole eggs, butter, avocados (high in vitamins, minerals, fiber, and good fat!) ... I could go on and on with the great food you can eat doing LCHF/keto!

As you can see, I'm enthusiastic about this WOE. That's because it's working for me and I understand it. I am best able to stick to LCHF (not exactly "keto") and aim for 50g carbohydrate (on average) a day. I'm running at 79g/day right now and losing weight, so that works for me, but I need to do better on my BS numbers. (Keeping things under 20g requires very careful planning and is more difficult for me, personally, but people do it every day!) My recent average BS is around 150mg/dL with an A1c at about 7% overall right now. I'm working on doing better, but it's a whole lot better than 275 mg/dL and an A1c over 10%!

So, best wishes and good luck on your health journey, MadameSting! Do your research carefully and choose a path that is sustainable and healthy. You can do this!

11 posts pushing a diet. The keto zealotry is real. Or you can find the diet that is best for you using the foods you like which allow a deficit since that is what fat loss comes down to. You can eat keto foods AND whatever else you enjoy.

Man, I woke up to a lot of comments on this thread. Thank you for the the input, some of it was helpful. For those that do not understand feelings of rebellion when "made" to do something, don't comment because your comments weren't relative or helpful. We're not solving world problems here, I'm writing about my feelings on my weight loss journal.

Mira- Thought you said you have been treading water since 2006 and gained and lost several times in the last handful of years. How is it that this is working for you? "Pretty enthusiastic" about something- that in my eyes- based solely on YOUR posts- hasn't done too much. And I'm a person who doesn't care how someone chooses to eat- whatever you want to do- go for it. Simply finding it odd when a person who isn't able to do what he or she needs to do for him/her self pushes it onto others.

Diablo360, I try to avoid long posts with no paragraph breaks in "Comments," so that's why I went to 11 (reallly? I lost count!) "episodes." I'm not "pushing a diet" I get no compensation of any kind for saying what I say here. People are certainly free to choose what works for them. However, yes, I advocate for LCHF/keto to a T2 diabetics needing to lose a lot of weight because it's an alternative to the "standard of care" that has been KILLING diabetics for generations now. I believe in sharing what I've learned works for me, especially for my diabetes, and doing so with enthusiasm. (It would be SO NICE if you could resist the editorial comment on LCHF/keto posts. Let's not start a war here today. Please.)

Davidsprincess, LCHF is working quite well for my diabetes. My "rebellion" is in the form of relapses that keep my weight (unfortunately) "stable." I'm working on both. I'm happy with the diabetes control, not at all with my weight loss.

Keep moving forward, keep fighting in spite of really fun setbacks. I’ve been dealing with type 2 since I was diagnosed at age 40. I’m 67 now and still hopping back on the wagon. I gained 20 lbs back now I’m losing it.....slower than I want but whut the hey

Yeah I'll take the thousands of people who reversed type 2 diabetes by simply getting to a healthy weight and webmd's suggestions over a random doctor pushing his hypotheses. but of course it seems you have it all figured out and have reached your ideal weight and maintained it on keto for years...or maybe not. you keep talking about the fact that you learned so much but all you're doing is reading and parroting hypotheses.

OK- well good luck, Miraculum! Hope you stick with it! 💕👍🏻

Solving puzzles is fun. Tricky ones take time. Bet you've solved a few already regarding yourself. Every now and then I feel finished with mine, but then new things come up. Keeping at it and enjoy the steps of progress.

Falling off the wagon and climbing back on again are part of the process! Sometimes our inner child rebels against our own strictness and we go overboard in the wrong direction. This is probably a sign you are being too strict. It is better to eat a small piece of cake now and then than to deny the inner child of everything and allow her to eat a half a cake in a moment of weakness. Inner child is not just interested in food-do something you like that doesn’t involve food. Go roller skating, bowling, horseback riding-whatever is a treat for you.

@ Lizziewhisler, thank you! Yes, my inner child is very petulant right now.

Good luck, Madame Sting! I feel the same rebellion towards any and all forms of exercise. For years my husband tried to get me to exercise and that made me dig my heels in even further. (he finally stopped asking) Now I'm training for a marathon and he's doing the training plan with me (on my terms.) I'm enjoying it because I feel totally in control of what I'm doing, not pushed by someone else, and I imagine that there are people who think I can't do it and I want to prove those imaginary people wrong. Rebellion! Healthy or not, that's the way I'm wired too. I hope you find the "something" to rebel against in your weight loss journey so it's more fun. 😉

@ Timetodropthelbs, thank you! You articulated my feelings nicely. My inner child is just whining now. I am ready to rebel against my status quo and I do want to. External forces aside, I want to make a change.

I don't know why we all aren't born with the same metabolism so we could eat what we want and not gain a pound! Unfortunately that didn't happen, so now we have to deal with it.

Cut out the carbs totally only have healthy carbs from vegetables except potatoes and you will find your blood sugar will even out. Insulin spikes are caused by carbs and your body over the years has become insulin resistant. You need to reset your body. You can do it many others have including my father.
