Day 1 musings...

I am so great at solving puzzles and problems; yet, I cannot focus on solving my own. I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in March 2018. I was really focused at first. I lost 50 lbs. and my numbers were good. Then, I fell off the wagon.

See, I have to lose weight. I have to overhaul my diet. I have to watch my cholesterol intake. I have to quit smoking. I have to become more active. All of these "have to" mandates have the rebel inside of me clawing at my skin to break out. I have always done what I wanted. Now, my body is betraying me. I have to do what my body wants...and I do not want to.

My hope is this will provide the catharsis necessary to actually listen to my body. If not, the recipes look promising...

You and your body are the same person. Sounds like you are listening to it.

Congrats on your continued education and commitment to you community. I have also been pretty pissed off at my body. Yesterday in explaining that to my pulmonologist he told me "Some of us, as we grow older, our bodies hit a threshold; you can start to take care of it or..." It's hard. I wish you all the luck. This is a great site with wonderful people.

We are not as a rule taught self-care while we are growing up. Some of us fall into a sacrificing role. It takes time to find a happy medium and live the best life for yourself. Learning to be your own bestfriend takes work, but you're are so worth it. 😊

I hope you find a WOE / way of living that you are comfortable with. You can!

I used to feel like it was me vs. my body, but that changed for me a year and a half ago. Someone that passed though my life had mentioned the thought of "being the best caretaker for your vessel", to love myself enough to take care of yourself." That message keep popping up around me and it finally sunk in. This is the only body that I will have, and nobody will take care of it like me. Hope you find you way!

I have no true advice but want to say I definitely get the rebellion aspect you're talking about. All it takes is for me to think I have to do it...for another part of me to sabotage the efforts as I get closer. I'm not sure what changed this time around but I hope you find a way to overcome this obstacle. Best wishes! Becc@- I agree.

Your body is not betraying you—- you are betraying your body. It is doing its best to keep you alive.

I think there's a little rebel in us all. The trick is to figure out how to overcome it. I tell myself I'm not denying myself anything, I'm just doing things in smaller quantities. I've never smoked, so I'm not much help in that. My dad was a very heavy smoker and said he had to do it "cold turkey," because even 1 little cig could start the habit up again. He did admit that food tasted a lot better after he quit. On exercise, I find the best way to do it is to look at it as your play time. I find that exercise is King! Be sure to find exercise you actually like. I don't have a gym membership, because I know I won't go. I'm just too lazy to start the car up to drive there, so all of my exercise is done at home or during break times at work. I enjoy exercise videos, so I search YouTube. My favorites are "Live Love Party," "Jessica and Peanut," and "Jane Fonda." As for eating....I'm not to strict, but do count. I try to keep my calories below 1400 and total fat intake to 27g, but haven't really been watching the fat intake anymore like I should. I look for low cal snacks. The great news is that all fruit is low cal! I try to keep my daily intake balanced, so I'm not denying myself anything. If they have an office party, I joint in with not regrets. I just make sure the rest of my meals and snacks are very low calorie. My candy jar is filled with "the good stuff" like Hershey's Kisses, Snicker bites, 3 Musketeer bites, and Lindtz Tuffles. Then I allow myself no more than 2-3 to keep that rebel in control. Motivation.....Ok, I'm guilty! It used to be I don't want to go on cholesterol meds, but not anymore. My new motivation is nice clothes. I want to look as nice as the ladies in the fancy offices.

welcome. I've been a member of FS for ... years... which probably tells you that I have been successful and then gained it all back... and successful again... It's a battle. I get it. You need to make the changes for your health's sake. That seems so obvious... and, still, it is obscure when there is a plate of chocolate chip cookies, bottle of wine, platter of fried chicken (insert your favorite food here) lying in front of you. This site is great for motivation and encouragement. I hope that you will find to to be a place to keep you going on the path towards health.

MadameSting, I rebelled against T2 diabetes for more than 15 years (diagnosed at age 47) and, lemme tell ya, it comes back to bite-cha big time! In March 2001, I was at my peak weigh of 285 pounds and a couple of courses of a "new and better" antibiotic plus Prednisone completed the damage to my pancreas as I recovered from a stubbornly persistent bout of pneumonia. I looked at your food diary for Day 1. I know you're very new at this, but the American Diabetes Association and many endocrinologists and diabetes counselors and nutritionists would be so proud! You may have noticed: It's a recipe for starvation, cravings, hunger pangs *and* worsening diabetes: very low calories (<800), very little protein (<15g), very little fat (<20g), but 141g of carbohydrate. Many of us T2 diabetics on FatSecret are having great success lowering our blood sugar and A1c averages, as well as our weight, on a low-carb/high-fat/moderate-protein diet. It's recently been (reluctantly!) acknowledged by the ADA as an alternative to the "standard of care" that has long prevailed. It's a foreign concept in Western medicine, not relying on drugs to control blood sugar. The ADA's program has a 7% A1c (average BS of 145 mg/dL) as it's "goal." Well, hell's bells! That *still* diabetic range and eventually earns the T2 diabetic the array of end organ damage and a miserable death that he's trying desperately to avoid! [CONTINUED]

It doesn't have to be that way! People are eating LCHF/"ketogenic" (<20g carbohydrate per day) and REVERSING their diabetes. I suggest that you do your research and find what kind of program fits you, but include these FREE resources (everything you need to know is online). [CONTINUED]

(1) Dr. Ken D. Berry -- on YouTube, search by his full name and "Keto 101" for a whole series of relatively short and highly educational and how-to videos on this "WOE" ("way of eating"). A native Tennessean, very down-home and practical, and author of "Lies My Doctor Told Me."

(2) www.DietDoctor.com, which has a great index on its opening page that will introduce you to the scientific concepts of LCHF and ketogenic diets and provide lists of foods, recipes, menus, and success stories. (They have a $9/mo. membership, but you don't need to purchase it to access all that stuff.) DietDoctor was founded by a Swedish doctor, Andreas Eenfeldt, M.D. (In Sweden they've all but adopted this WOE as a standard.). Dr. Eenfeldt has a great video on YouTube called "The Food Revolution" that you should see. It details how the high-carb/low-fat craze of the last 50 years has caused an explosion in obesity and diabetes.

(3) Jason Fung, M.D., a Toronto nephrologist who treats his desperately-ill chronic kidney disease patients (who are often diabetic) with the LCHF/ketogenic diet. He also has videos on DietDoctor.com and YouTube, and has written two excellent books detailing the rationale of his treatment program: "The Obesity Code" and "The Diabetes Code." He thinks of obesity and diabetes as *hormonal* disorders -- but not like "I'm fat --- it's my hormones!" -- that can be treated and reversed with the LCHF/keto diet. He has a record of successes that are undeniable. (Some say he's a quack, but the program is working for us diabetics!)

I don’t get this rebel thing— without care and management of diabetes you are always going to lose and the disease will always win. It’s a mindset. How long do you want to live and keep all your body parts intact. Hmmm let me think. Teens go through the rebellious thing— adults can make choices. Make friends with your body and the foods that you need to eat in order to stay healthy. Take a page out of Keyten77 s book and make cooking and eating a fun thing, an adventure, a game to be played with others— regardless of your WOE it does not have to be punishing or boring.

I struggle with long term goals vs short term wants also. I want to be healthy and continue to lose weight, but that means I don't get the short term wants of that bag of chips and I will pout and get all crabby. It's not easy to say no to instant gratification. What do I WANT to do today that will also satisfy what I WANT (need) for tomorrow.I have to reframe every choice so that I'm actually choosing what I REALLY want. Making the choice of the apple NOT the donut because I don't want a headache, and the apple has all sorts of extra benefits. It requires a LOT of planning and that is a habit that takes time to build. I was pre-diabetic at 300 lbs. I'm good at 180, but still have a long road ahead, just 5 lbs at a time because 50 is too overwhelming.

Short answer: Plan your meals ahead of time. Your calories should be at a "deficit" to lose weight for a person your height, but under 800 a day is WAY too low. Start by doubling that. Aim, at first, to keep your daily carbohydrates under 100g (400 calories worth of food) that allows for a lot of low-carb vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, asparagus, cucumber, celery, kale, and brussels sprouts, and a tasty addition: olives!).
