I'm so sorry that your friend is having such a difficult time, Debbie. Mental illness *and* struggles with her family -- a very tough combination. Keep in mind that you can be no help to her if you're not at your best. Maintain your discipline even if it's for the sake of being able to "be there" for others. Be gentle with yourself!

I am not sure if this helps, but I have a friend who recently had an episode and they are still recovering from it. I tend to want to help people solve their problems, but another friend reminded me that with mental illness solving the problem isn’t black and white and there is only so much a friend can do to make a difference when the person is having an episode. None of this is your fault and you are doing the best you can, which is much more than many people would do in the first place!

Try to relax and enjoy your birthday. Make it a happy time for others if you can't do so for yourself. They want to cheer you up and have a nice time with you. Try some deep breathing exercises. They help with relaxation. Look on youtube for some Qigong and anxiety videos.
