Okay so I need some advice. I am 51 years old, current weight 273.2 and height 5'5". I just gained 1 pound this last week averaging 1,500 calories a day. I am not watching my carbs or fats, strictly calories in, calories out. I cannot exercise right now...torn knee meniscus waiting on surgical consult.

What would those that have been successful with weigh loss suggest? Cutting calories further? Cutting carbs (has not worked for me in the past), lower fat, keep doing the same with more patience, something else? Any ideas will be appreciated. I almost forgot, I have been lifting some small arm weights a few times a week as I can tolerate. Thank you. Cindy

Can we first start with recognizing the weight loss success you have had so far? 10 pounds in little over a month is very good considering you are unable to exercise due to the knee (but the weights you are doing is GREAT!). As far as advice, I can't really give it, only to say that I am 50 years old, I have been obese all my adult life (highest weight was 248). I cannot 'eat' low carb (I always get hungry and 'binge'). I manage to 'consume low carb' when I go days of not eating 'solid food' Mostly drinking low carb protein shakes. Most people on the site told me I was crazy when I started doing that 9 months ago, but, today I am no longer fat. Good Luck!

What helped me was to weigh everything that I was eating. I get out my scale for all my meals, or make sure that I am taking a measured serving of something like a snack bag of cookies or a slice of cake. I currently am working on reducing fats, but also just do calories in, calories out because I don't resist cakes and cookies. When I was losing 2 pounds a week, I was very strict about weighing and measuring and ALSO cut fats and increased vegetables.

10 pounds a month is great progress and a sign you are doing things right.

I find for me that I drop all at once. One day I was up .7 then the next day down 3 pounds. I think you need to consider water weight, if you have gone to the potty etc. Its all about the math of in vs out. I think my body lets go in chunks. So keep it up and you will see a drop. This is what they call a plateau.

I also find weighing food to be really helpful. Because I'm in my 40's and my metabolism isn't what it used to be, I have to keep my calories at 1300ish to see any weight loss. I'm 5'7", I walk around 45 minutes a day, 6 times per week.

What has worked best for me is a little more calories than I used to think was healthy for weight loss (1800-2000) but less carbs. I am for less than 100 net carbs per day (total carbs minus fiber). Fat fills my stomach so much better than carbs which really helps me not to be tempted to cheat so I don’t do the low fat thing at all.. I am 5’3, stared out at 276 now down to 245. But more than anything I agree with the others, celebrate the weight you already lost and have some grace with yourself! Some weeks you might not lose but If your overall trend is down and you are feeling healthier than before that is what is most important!

Hang in everyone! This is very much like Weight Wathers used to be in the 90's. I lost 86lbs of baby weight, I was younger and had 2 jobs, so that helped. Don't consider this a diet. Diet is a terrible word, anything with "die" in it isnt good. Think "life-improving". "Habit-changing", NEW PATH", ANYTHING UP-BEAT!! It takes 3 weeks to change a habit(right)? The 1st month is hardest. Before you know it, you wont need your food diary, you'll know a correct portion. THIS IS GREAT, WE CAN EAT WHATEVER, WITHIN OUR CALORIE RANGE, AND LOOSE WEIGHT!! I JUST STARTED TODAY. HELLO EVERYONE! LET'S DO THIS!!! 💖

I am just going to repeat what the others said. You are doing really well and hopefully it will soon feel like "enough" for you. I struggle with that as well. I also found that weighing my food helped tremendously! I also sort of meal plan. I do a big batch of a couple of meals that I know I will eat and put them in small containers in the freezer. Then each night (or morning if I forget lol) I pull out what I will be eating. This way I can eat what I plan for and not have to struggle with cooking something when I get hungry which just seems to make me want more than usual. It took a while to get that this was happening so this is a relatively new thing for me (I've been doing it for a couple of months-ish). I would say try things for a couple of weeks and see what works for you. Obviously something is working already so keep that up!! But if you are looking for more or just want to dial it in...watch what other people here are doing. Snoop! I like to look at other peoples food diaries to see what they eat, especially if they are losing larger amounts of weight. Then start talking to them, ask them about how they do what they are doing! I don't think I would have lost nearly this much if I wasn't completely obnoxious to all my friends here at FS. Take some some advise, try it for a couple of weeks to see how it feels/works for you, and then if need be...go back to the drawing board and try something else!! Pretty soon you start seeing what works and what doesn't!

Eat under your weightloss RDI. Daily carb/protein/fat breakdown around 45%/35%/20%. Get rid of bad carbs such as white bread and white pasta (whole grains are better) and get most carbs from vegetables. Make the majority of meals with mostly vegetables and/or fruit. Get fat free or reduced fat items - such skim or 2% dairy products. Do not exceed 5 oz of beef/pork or 7 oz of chicken/fish/turkey per day (get a food scale). Look through youtube to see if there are any exercise gurus who have videos of exercises for those with injuries and confirm with your doctor if those exercises are okay.

Also eat every 2-3 hours. Like a banana or fruit or protein bar to keep your metabolism always churning.

You're doing great. Ignore the 'you must diet this way' stuff, what you are doing works for you. There are all sorts of reasons why the scale doesn't cooperate, and most of the time it's just water. Did you have more salt? Did you drink enough water? Did you get enough sleep? At your calorie range, you lost fat. If the scale doesn't show it today, don't fret. It will. I'll echo the 'be patient' sentiments.

Sorry, I tried to add formatting so my comment would be huge, but it didn't work. I'll be brief this time. Just be patient. Go ahead and set your goal, but don't worry about deadline because every loss is a win, no matter how small it is or how long it takes.

Honey, if I had the answers, I wouldn’t be fat. I’m just going to do better than I have been doing and see what happens. Good luck to you!

But you are losing weight. Congratulate yourself on the success! Just imagine what 2020 will look like if you keep doing your best. I had surgery 2 years in a row. I exercised all body parts that weren’t affected. You can do this!!!

Just keep doing what you are doing. I lost 100 pounds years ago doing 1500 calories a day. I can remember having a gain when I knew it wasn't possible. There were weeks I would have a big loss when I over ate. Couldn't figure it out... 20 years later I have to do it again!

I would focus more on fat- protein to carb ratios... the app has the graph for help--you should be 50% carb , 20% fat and 30% protein. Also switch up your food choices and exercise! I just adjusted my carbs ratio and it's made a difference.

Hello my dear, I agree with other comments that you're doing great after all. But disagree with eat every few hours. Such a terrible advice! Has been medically proved that every time you eat you spike your insulin (store fat store fat). So whatever you eat in a day, whatever is your favorite healthy diet, do it in a short time window and you'll see results right away.

As others have said you've done well losing 10 lbs fairly quickly. Weight loss often isn't linear, give it some time and keep doing what you've already been doing that has been working. General suggestions: Measure or weigh everything you eat, guessing or estimating quantities usually results in consuming more than you think you are. Get adequate protein to help conserve muscle retention. Limit processed carbs/sugars and eat whole foods as much as possible. Wishing you continued success!
