It's my birthday today. Not a big deal for me anymore. But, there is already cake in the refrigerator and ice cream in the freezer. I am going to try to save calories for a cake and ice cream treat so I do not go over on my calories.

I got the results back from the MRI of my knee yesterday. The doctor says I have a huge tear in the meniscus and is referring me to an orthopedic surgeon. Anyone have experience with this type of surgery? What I can expect as far as pain, recovery, prognosis? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

In the meantime while I wait for surgery, I will continue to log every bite I put into my mouth. Despite my lack of activity, I have lost almost 12 pounds since Christmas. I am beginning to feel a difference in the way my clothes fit, so that is definitely motivation. Also, although I fell and made the knee problem much worse, I know this is a weight-related issue as well. So, despite this setback, I remain focused and motivated. I feel different about this weight loss journey than my past attempts. I really "believe" I can succeed this time. I will keep at this, one day at a time.

First let me start by saying Happy Birthday! As for meniscus surgery ....it isn't too bad. it often times is performed arthroscopically with 2 little incisions ....when healed they resemble to dots. At least mine do....Remarkably you will be walking that day or the next at the latest. Light stress obviously for about 2 to 6 weeks. but you will resume walking and therapy immediately usually. My repair has lasted 17 years but i now have to have replacements as i didn't take heed and abused them through excessive physical sports. As one of our fellow persons mentioned ......extreme jumping or.impact motions should be limited at least for some time. Full recovery varies with persons pain tolerance ....Tylenol advil or aleve will work for pain tolerance. keep elevated ice or heat and by all means move or stretch as directed when possible to avoid stiffening and shortening of the tissue. but within 2 to 4 months you should feel like you never had the surgery at all. Best of luck and recovery!

Had the surgery in 2014. The pain after is nothing like the pain before surgery. I had crutches but only used them a few days. Do not worry about the surgery. I did, and it was not necessary. Best wishes.

Thank you all for the birthday wishes and for the input regarding knee surgery. This site is awesome. I highly recommended the site when I saw my doctor last. And yes, I did enjoy my cake and ice cream without exceeding my daily calories. Yay!

Happy Birthday! My coworker just had the same surgery as you're going for. Don't know all the details yet, but she has been off work for a month now. So take good care of yourself after surgery.
