You don't have to buy "special" foods to follow Atkins. Keep it simple. Meats and fresh veggies.

Go to coupons.com or kraft.com and download FREE printable coupons. This is a great resource for coupons for Atkins friendly things you need to accompany your diet...such as Mayo, cheese, salad dressing, etc. Like Keli said, stick to fresh meats and veggies and keep things simple. Eggs are low cost and offer a lot of nutritional value - make eggs a staple of your eating plan and a strong base ingredient for meal planning.

I feel your pain hun as I too am in the same boat: disability and food stamps. It's hard, but we have to make ourselves a priority. I just got approved for my food stamps and was happy to go shopping yesterday. Take the suggestion of others buy the things like eggs and fresh veggies. Don't need any of the other crap. Don't know if you like them or not, but vienna sausages are really cheap and advised to eat in the new atkins book. Good luck my friend! Don't give up!

You can eat processed foods, it's just best not to over-do it. It's also best to try to find foods without nitrates and nitrites. Those things actually mess up your brain - they're nasty business, and how they're allowed in foods is beyond me. That being said, I still eat foods that have them in it. Go figure. :) Good luck with the shopping. I know it's hard. I don't know if you're on any medications or have other health problems that are costly, but personally I don't just look at "food" budget. I look at what I spend on food, medications (excluding birth control), doctors' visits (beyond normal preventative or directly-disability related, I'm a disabled veteran), and money spent on home workout DVDs, home workout equipment, or gym membership (which I no longer have). I call this my "Health" budget. The result has always been that as I spend more money on high-quality foods and veggies, the LESS money I spend on excess medications and doctors visits, and the overall number in my "Health" budget has gone down. Does that make sense? I hope it helps, and I hope it works for you! :)
