Tried to up the amount I’ve been eating from about 700 calories to about 1000 calories a day. Disastrous results. Swelled up by two kg overnight. All my old symptoms came back and the pain was insane. Things seem to have come right again now luckily but looks like I’m going to be stuck not eating for a while...

Anybody got any ideas how to explain to my family that I am not anorexic, I’m just finally listening to my body and doing what it tells me it needs. They’re very worried about how little I’m eating but I’m eating what I can manage without pain and the lectures just make things worse.

Careful. Damage happens over time. Go on Salt and Pepper history, and learn from that. She corrected it and now she is cruising at 1200 calories, and loosing every day in the most part. You cant expect positive changes in the body to happen overnight, they take 10 to 14 days to show the results of any change. Please be careful, 700 cals is less that my 19 month old baby is supposed to eat. Your body is in starvation mode.

A damaged metabolism does that. It has slowed down to the point where even eating a normal calorie intake is too much (1200-1400). It will result in weight gain until u correct this. Its usually corrected through a reverse diet.

I'm no expert, but I think 700 calories is far too little for anyone, especially if youjre also physically active. As suggested by the others, your body is likely starving so any extra calories taken in are just stored as fat for reserves. I'd recommend gradually upping your calories, say by a 100 every week until you're in a healthy range. You may gain weight, but our bodies are amazing in that they adjust what they burn according to what comes in (within a healthy range, of course). Also, if you're physically incapable of taking in more than 700 calories, maybe visit your doctor to ensure there's no underlying issues (e.g. there may be an absorption issue or something).

Thanks everybody for the concern, it’s actually all being monitored by a doctor though 😊 the radical drop in calories is due to major issues I had a little over a month ago that landed me in hospital twice. The condition I have has finally been diagnosed - after weeks and weeks and thousands of rands of fruitless testing - and is actually something I’ve been dealing with for years without realising it wasn’t something everybody experiences. Believe me, I’d like nothing more than to get back to a normal calorie intake but anything more than what I’m taking in at the moment causes major abdominal pain and nausea. It’s going to be a slow process especially with the vast majority of food now being unsafe for me to eat but, while I do enjoy the weight loss, it’s not about that for me so much as finally living a healthy and pain free life. The goal is to get back to 1200 calories a day but in the meantime it would be really nice to find a way to have my family supporting me instead of accusing me of developing anorexia.
