I'm supposed to be starting Keto with my hubby. He has started and is faring marvelously...me not so much, although I am eating better and less. I recently got diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I do NOT want to start taking pills and/or insulin. I suffer from the Dr. Peppers. Today was the first day I recorded what I ate and drank and it's sobering to see all the junky numbers in Dr. Pepper. That is going to be my Mt. Everest. It's hard because I don't really like to drink anything other than pop, water and regular milk. So, trying to substitute doesn't sound like a great idea, yet I don't know how well I'll fare on just water. I can eat Keto all day. I don't think that will bother me once I start and modify it to fit me. I also have the hurdle of working overnights. So staying awake is a must. Plus, I eventually want to eat vegetarian (eventually vegan) Keto. I am not hard and fast on that at the moment because I want to get pop out of my life first...and still stay sane and awake. And so it goes...

You can definitely do this! And I am happy to cheer you on. 😊 I have been living the Keto life for about 2 months now and am down 30 pounds (would have been more except for my vacation where I allowed myself to enjoy certain treats - and I am okay with that!) Came back from vacation and hopped right back on plan.

having any sugar is a no go on the keto diet, so no wonder you are not doing well. It is a challenge but you do need to block all sugars from your diet. We all have foods which have to be cut to get to that healthy lifestyle. I don't know what to suggest to you as there is no good replacement anywhere close to fitting. Pure water with lemon in it, I drink coffee with my heavy cream and stevia. You have to read labels carefully on anything you think to try for replacement, if it has net carbs then more than likely it has some form of sugar. Milk is out too for keto.

Try bottled ice tea. Would you rather have diabetes and die of its complications or give up the sodas?

Theera, Kenna sounded a little harsh, but has a point...somewhat. Anyway, I experienced a lot of difficulty giving up soda until I understood that it wasn't the soda that I really wanted. I just needed the fizz and the taste. I am in ketosis and have been for 2 months now. My weight has dropped between 20-24 pounds. I am medically guided and supported and I visit my provider for a follow up and weigh in every week. They are awesome and have provided terrific sample menus to follow. So, for the record COKE Zero and Sprite Zero are okay on a keto diet. So, if you are having a hard time with Dr. Pepper, grab a Cherry COKE Zero, limit yourself, and be happy with your dedication to your new healthier choice. You don't have to fit into any perfect mold.

Sugar/carb addiction is tough to break! I am fortunate, I quit drinking sugary sodas in college, my addiction was Caffè latte, 2 or 3 big ones a day, plus breads of all sorts. I always knew I was at risk for T2D, and after 10 years of being overweight I was diagnosed. That finally motivated me, and I switched to keto, lost over 30 lbs, and my A1c is now normal. I have maintained for 6 months now, and have HWC in my coffee.

If you think the truth is harsh, read up a little on the complications of diabetes if you are not familiar with this disease. A disease that can be controlled and/ or prevented based on some of the choices that people make.

I didn't say THE TRUTH is harsh. I'm saying your delivery was harsh. I am a product of generations of diabetes, I am a home health nurse, and I am a witness of what diabetes CAN do. I'm saying, she is admitting to her struggles, so offer her an alternative along with the truth.

I use to drink diet soda many years ago just because it was "diet" soda (plus it tasted different than todays diet sodas) BUT then I was realized I didn't really like the soda just the fizz. So now I drink club soda, sparkling seltzer water sometimes put lemon or lime but not really often, just like the carbonation. I have a friend that really likes diet cokes and will insist I have one when we go out for lunch rather than water (she says she drinks them because they are cheap and get free refills) I finally said I DON"T LIKE IT! So now she doesn't insist anymore. I also like to have different herb teas. My fav is jasmine & fresh ginger. AND I do the coffee (for caffine) with heavy cream, coconut oil & cininmon

Theera GREAT for you deciding to go on this journey. I have been on Keto for about 2 weeks now and have lost about 6 pounds, like you I have my vices - Sweet Tea and when I say sweet tea I mean southern style sweet tea where the ratio is more sugar than anything else. I didn’t know if I would be able to give it up and quite honestly I still struggle with doing so - this morning I stopped to grab food and was contemplating a tea. I decided against it but only because I was already eating out and was excited about my progress. That is not to say you could never enjoy a Dr. Pepper (my soda of choice too btw) again - you will eventually learn to give yourself a treat every once in a while. Remember this is your journey, no one else’s - good luck!

I agree with JMA312 - You will have to drink a few to figure out the ones you love, but there are so many zero calorie carbonated beverages out there. After many months of enjoying 'bubble water' (plain and flavored) I have discovered Virgils Zero Calorie sodas and they are delish! If I could give just one bit of advice .. it's to take it day by day. Baby Step your way to where you want to be (happier and healthier) and know that some days are going to be easier than others. But you just have to refocus and remember why you're doing it and then make your choice. ((hugs))
