Howdy from Texas. Married about three decades. Empty-nester. Life-long avid reader. New-ish writer of gothic and speculative fiction. Developed Binge Eating Disorder at 5 but athletics kept me slim until I had my first child at 30 and became a sleep-deprived, time-deprived, sedimentary, sugar/carb addicted mom. Now scientists know what causes my specific type of BED. Its Leptin resistence in the brain. My brain has plenty of Leptin but can't see it because I over-produce insulin. Though my body preforms a little trick which makes my blood glucose readings look normal. My extra insulin binds to the brain cell receptors meant for the Leptin, so my brain can't see its Leptin which makes it believe I'm starving and causes me to be obsessed with food. Happily there is a solution. Sadly it's one that as a sugar-addict I don't entirely like. That is to stop producing so much insulin. Which for me means learning to live without sugar and with fewer carbs. So that is the journey I keep getting on, straying from, and returning to. Honestly, the desire for sugar never completely leaves me, but as soon as I'm in ketosis I find it manageable and I couldn't care less about carbs anymore. So the key for me, it seems, is to get in ketosis and then resist the still faint but seductive lure of sugar's siren call. My dream is to have enough time in keto to lose my weight and heal my hair-trigger pancreas so that one day I can live a paleo-plus-dairy life. There are some studies that hint this might be possible.
