Friday Morning Weigh in. I'm hoping my scale isn't playing mind games on me! I stepped on and off about 20x this morning 😂 does the morning or evening weigh ins make a difference? Which is the most accurate? Should I even be caring what the scale says?

Your weight does not matter!!! Overall health DOES...I can see that (unless you are 6 foot) you could probably loose weight, but that weight should be fat loss and not muscle. When people restrict food intake the body will not only break down fat, it will also breakdown muscle. The less muscle your body has and the lower your metabolic rate becomes making loosing further "weight" even harder. A scale is influenced by so much...the amount of food or water in you, the time of day, and even the moon (yes, the moon) so you can weigh yourself, but I would try to do it only 2x per month on a Wednesday early in the morning. More importantly I would focus on FAT loss...you should be eating 2000 cal per day if not more and doing heavy weight training about 2x per week. Eat whole, nourishing foods and be careful on a ketogenic diet..your brain runs on carbs so...you do need them!

@Wellness5, check into the latest research. Your brain's preferred foods are ketone bodies. Not carbs. The brain is composed of mostly cholesterol. For the tiny amount of glucose the brain needs, the liver is in charge of gluconeogenesis. Research!

"Your brain runs on carbs?" Ouch! No YOUR brain runs on carbs. She has trained hers to run on ketones. Research shows eating a ketogenic diet spares muscle while burning fat! Fact checking time.....😉 And a brain that runs off ketones instead of carbs is a beautiful thing!

When fats are converted to sugar in the absence of carbohydrates, ketones are produced. These molecules are very similar to acetone in their structure. They affect brain function in a fashion that is similar to alcohol, impairing our decision-making abilities, as well as our awareness and judgment. (http://www.carlagoldenwellness.com/2015/06/15/is-the-brain-fueled-by-fat-protein-or-carbs/) The dangers associated with ketone production are simple. Ketones are toxic to brain and central nervous system function. If ketone presence is in large enough quantities for prolonged periods, in extreme cases death can occur. Ketosis & Keto-Acidosis are terms used to describe the condition. (https://www.afpafitness.com/research-articles/no-one-wants-a-ketone-body) Long-term ketones being produced in your body is not healthy...regardless of what short-term effects "seem" to be, starving your body is not healthy. I understand the research done on ketones, ketoacidosis, lchf--I have researched it and from what I have gathered (looking at both sides) it is simply not effective for a long term diet/lifestyle...especially if you exercise! I don't recommend super high-refined carby diets---this is NOT healthy for blood sugar, either. Balance is! Carbs should come from whole food sources such as brown rice, potatos, bananas, fruit, ezekiel bread etc. I know this is a rather controversial topic and ultimately it does boil down to personal opinion but I do believe that more people should be aware of the possible dangers of following any diet --including ketogenic-- so they know if it is really right for them. P.S. I forget the study done...I will try to find it again but recently a study was done showing that a womans hormone levels are much more stable when they have a normal percentage of carbs in the diet...it is worth looking into.

Best to weigh yourself in the morning-- before breakfast but after pooping! Gives you accurate numbers :)! I prefer to weigh myself almost everyday because it keeps me accountable. The scale I use is at the gym. I usually weigh myself after b-fast, post workout, and after going to the bathroom. I find that if I weigh myself pre-work out and the numbers are disappointing, my work out won't have that edge that it usually does. Best of luck on your journey

I will add to what SailorEarth stated, by saying... make sure your weigh-ins are spaced apart (i.e. once every three days OR once-a-week) and at the SAME TIME OF THE DAY at each weigh-in. I think you will see a more positive progression of your overall efforts in doing it this way.

Ketosis and ketoacidosis are not related, or similar conditions. Anyone who explains metabolism and puts them in the same category doesn't understand what they are talking about. Furthermore, Low Carb was suggested by my MD AND my Mom's surgeon. Since beginning this way of eating my Mom's blood tests have shocked her doctors. They are scratching their heads because her 'stage 3 kidney disease' disappeared. Her blood didn't get 'better' it's completely normal. They don't understand - they have never seen it reversed. She was prediabetic- her sugars are also normal. She has weaned off all sorts of different medications and looks 10 years younger. You obviously haven't tried ketosis because their is nothing sluggish about a brain running on keytones. Low carb isn't for everyone but done properly, with plenty of varieties of vegetables eaten daily, and proteins eaten daily, and good fats like olive oil and avocado- the body gets everything it needs to thrive. Most people can tolerate berries and melon at maintenance upon reaching their goal. The body gets everything it needs and more. I have yet to meet a single doctor or nurse practitioner who has looked at my diet & my Mom's diet and now my daughter's low carb diet who isn't supporting and cheering on our lifestyle and that's about 7 different health care professionals. Even my neurologist suggests a low carb die for migraine sufferers. That's A LOT of professionals with degrees in medicine giving a thumbs up to low carb. Personally, I feel fantastic and energetic and vibrant after 8 months in ketosis. If my body needed to run on carbs I would have been dead a long time ago! But instead I have obliterated body aches, pains and blood sugar issues and have the energy I had in my thirties. Talk to ANY pre-diabetic who has tried low carb and they will tell you a similar story.

I've noticed that I weifh better in the morning and at night before I go to bed. You're suppose to weigh yourself at the same time for consistency. I take a loss anyway I could get it. Keep up the good work and I wish I was that weight right now but i'm aspiring to get there. 👊🏾😜

I find the ketosis discussion interesting so... :) My question to the pre-diabetic would be, what were you eating prior to low carb? If it was the SAD diet than of course that won't work well...processed carbs are bad for you, wreck your blood sugar, and promote weight gain. Eating low carb is NOT the same as making your body produce ketones...I think the whole idea of why a Dr. etc. would recommend it would be because a lower processed sugar diet...(which may be lower carb for some people) is healthier. BUT going zero carb and knowingly producing ketones in your body (leading to exhaustion, ketoacidosis, protein in your urine etc.) is not good. I really like how you mention "done properly" as I believe to many people try out diets that are too extreme/not right for them and they end up drastically hurting themselves! As a side note I am "sugar sensitive" so eating candy, corn chips, white bread, pasta, or simple carbs w/o fiber or processed carbs makes me dizzy as well as gives me a racing heart...been this way for over 4 yrs. which lead me to start researching health (which eventually become too extreme but that is a different topic) so I do understand the whole sugar thing. But please...be careful trying any diet without guidance of a physician who knows what they are doing and follow you gut instict...if it doesn't feel good, it probably should be checked into. I am not saying your body runs ONLY on carbs, but you do need a least some in your diet to function ESPECIALLY if you are exercising...

Ketoacidosis is dangerous. A ketogenic diet is not, and is excellent for weight loss or maintenance for those who do well on it. It's easy to confuse the two.

Wellness5: You are posting these comments on a thread started by a member who posts photos of the vegetables she is eating such as kale. Kale is FAR from zero carb. 😉 Try reading about metabolic syndrome and you will better understand why low carb is very appropriate for certain people. Re- your assumption about SAD being the culprit: My Mom's doctor suggested Atkins which is under 20-30 carbs with about 15 carbs from fibrous veggies. My Mom and I were raised on real, homemade food and she has always grown all her own vegetables since I was a kid (massive organic garden) and used to bake her own bread right up to the point she started low carb. We are not talking SAD by any stretch of the imagination. We are talking 'metabolic syndrome' and it doesn't matter if the carbs are from her homegrown figs. I used to eat whole grains but I feel so much better cutting them out of my diet. When I reach my goal I might add in a bit of chickpeas, lentils and sweet potatoes. It was very strange starting low carb/ Keto and it took a leap of faith but I am so grateful that I did it. In my twenties I had a period of about 3 years where I was lifting weights 5 times a week and eating what I thought was an extremely healthy diet- low fat, lots of lean protein and lots of veggies with very little oil or butter besides olive oil and nuts/seeds. Strictly whole grains and legumes (a habit I never gave up) I looked fantastic. But I had to EAT every 2-3 hours or I got ravenously hungry. This was not sustainable (especially as a mother of 3 kids now) though I was the picture of health. For some people, not everyone though, the bottom line is that the carbs are the problem. I suspect metabolic syndrome has been a problem for me for decades. Once I took away the majority of the carbs- almost all my health problems went away. Take a look at my food pics. These are not the food interests of a person accustomed to the SAD. 😉.

Diabetes daily.com: “nutritional ketosis” is the result of a nutritional approach that both non-diabetics and diabetics can safely achieve through low-carb nutrition.

Thanks Bluecoaster...still not "thrilled" with the idea of ketosis but I am glad it worked for you...although I recommend whole foods vs. simply "low-carb." One reason you may have had cravings and constantly snacking was the lack of fat in your diet as fat is very satiating--just a thought, but I totally understand the whole sugar idea of carbs! Nor do I disbelieve you about low carb working for some people, I just don't think it is a good idea for the general population. I will certainly check out the article and do more research! P.S. I am looking to become an RD so this is one reason I am very interested in learning more about nutrition, health, lifestyles, and diets. Thanks!

Blue coaster- I think you explained this all so well. I too was suggested a low carb diet many years ago. I was stage 2 diabetic and through Atkins was able to reverse it. I no longer take medications. I stopped low carb, got married, got comfortable, got pregnant, and gained quite a bit of weight. But I decided to get my act together and found a Keto diet to be a great choice for me. The best part of life- everyone can choose what ever they find is best for them. Low carb is best for me.
