Don't deprive your body of what it needs. Nourish it with good food :)

Thanks guys. Can I ask what you guys typically have as your meals? Do you follow a particular eating plan? So far I've only been counting calories but I'm thinking I should probably be counting fat, carbs, protein etc as well. But I did notice that 3 slices of toast has the same amount of calories as a bowl of udon that I normally make, except I get twice the amount of food with a bowl of udon.

On the web page you can see the food diaries of others if they have it set to public view😊

There are certain foods I avoid because of a health thing not a weight thing. I don't follow a diet per se although I guess you could call it that. A typical day for me would be something like: Breakfast - Chai Latte with Soy Milk and a Banana or poached egg and bacon at the weekend. Lunch is usually soup or a salad with chicken or tuna and I usually have a pear, apple, strawberry and mandarins as snacks .. lots of people will tell you this is too much fruit, it might be but I've always eaten a lot of fruit, it's not a 'filler upper' for me, I actually like it. Dinner is always a meat or fish and vegetables....lots of whatever is in season. I sometimes make it into a 'something' with a Celebrate Health sauce from Coles as these are gluten and dairy free. I snack on things like a slice of cheese (I know that this is at odds with my dairy free haha), miso soup and I usually have a couple of Allens lollies each day too. I am a BIG believer in not cutting out a particular food group. Each to their own and I can only talk of what works for me personally. I avoid gluten and most dairy but I get carbs and calcium from other sources. I haven't counted calories for a long time but I'd say what I eat is usually between 1200-1500 cals a day depending on what I have. I am also a big believer in not denying yourself constantly, it's not good for you (me) mentally. About once a month I have a bit of a binge and eat things I normally wouldn't. I don't see these as treats, I see them as my body has been telling me for 3 days that it wants a pack of doughnuts, some chips, a choc bar and a fizzy pop and that's what it shall get! Sure I feel like crap afterwards physically for a day or two but at the time that cinnamon and choc is the sunlight of my day haha. You have to get in the mindset though where it is the exception rather than the norm and you can do it without guilt and get back on track straight after. Most times I can, sometimes I can't - such is life. You just have to be confident that at some point, you will make better choices :-) xxx

Just out of interest, why did you fast for 24 hours?
2016년 09월 1일 작성이: JustineJones
Oh right yes, thank Jane. =) Justine, I did it because I wanted to see how long I could go without food for and because I've read a lot of positive things regarding the health benefits of doing a 24hr fast now and then. Now that I've conquered the 24hr fast, I plan on starting the alternate day fasting diet. My goal is not only to lose weight but to reverse my insulin resistance and from what I have been reading, intermittent fasting is the best way to do it.

I just realised I only read half your comment, Justine. Sweets are my nemesis. I crave them constantly and it has been much harder to cut them out of my regular diet than it was to quit smoking. And I was a smoker since 13 and quit at 27. I used to eat chocolate and lollies EVERY day. I couldn't tell you exactly how much of it I was eating, but I can say for sure that it was a lot and at least 2 family blocks a week and a couple party packs of lollies a week, easy. Now I maybe eat a pack of licorice in a fortnight and sometimes a pack of scorched almonds too. Donuts are probably my main weakness. I can eat a dozen easy and feel like I could eat a dozen more if I had them in front of me. Cinnamon though, can't eat more than 2 iced ones. These days though, since drastically reducing the amount of sugar I have in my regular diet (I was also drinking 3-5 cups of coffee per day with 3 tablespoons of sugar in each one), I find my cravings for sweets is still there, but I can't I can't tolerate as much of it as I used to. Now 1 iced donut is on the verge of being too sweet for me. I found my change in tolerance for sweet things since cutting out sweets almost completely compared to what I was eating before to be pretty interesting. What is your opinion on intermittent fasting?

Haha thats ok....it was a pretty long winded comment from me :-) The funny thing for me is that I used to be a savoury gal all the way until I cut out gluten and diary. Now I get sweet cravings! I got told it was because I was lacking something called chromium which is in a lot of gluten products so I took a supplement which didn't work for me so I stopped and just give into the cravings every so often :-) It sounds like you really have it under control though which is great, I hear that the less you have the less you want (apparently) so it's great that you have got down to that level - it would have been so hard with the coffee hey? I know a few people who fasting 5:2 has worked very well for but I've never tried it myself. If you're trying it for a medical reason and it's been recommended to you then hopefully it will work for you, but you should probably talk it through with a doctor though if you haven't already becuase 24 hours seems a lot. Personally, I couldn't go that long without food, I'd feel terrible. The good thing about this site though is that everyone can give you a bit of different advice based on what works for them and then you can take from it what will work for you. I know that I actually wouldn't recommend gluten or dairy free to someone purely as a way to lose weight - most of the GF/DF products out there are usually higher in cals and sugars. For me though, when I do it for my health reason, I tend to get more energy and exercise more which is where my loss comes from. I know others on here swear by low carb, high fat and others like yourself are trying fasting. Take in all the advice you can but listen to your body and how you feel. A 'diet' shouldn't make you feel like crap, it should make you feel better today than you did yesterday :-) xx

For sure, cutting down on coffee was bad enough, but cutting down on sugar in my coffee... that's a mission and a half and something I still struggle with. I was substituting sugar for sweeteners for a while, then switched to coconut blossom sugar. But I only need 1 tsp now, compared to the 3 tablespoons I used to have in my coffee. >.< Yeah its crazy! Gone are the days where I could demolish a family block of chocolate in 1 sitting. Now I usually can't even finish off a chocolate bar. I WILL come back to the chocolate bar later though, guaranteed lol. Other than the amount of sugar I was consuming, the other thing that was pretty bad was that sweets never make me full, so I would just keep eating another piece and another piece and now that I think about it, it seemed very "automatic" sometimes, like it wasn't even a thought, it was just an automatic action. Kinda like being on auto pilot. Yeah the 24hr fast thing was a struggle towards the last 3-4hrs. I felt pretty good through most of it though. But now I'm worried I just sent my body into starvation mode and everything I eat will get turned into fat. I'm worried about that with the alternate day fasting too, but I'm so overweight I feel like I need to do something drastic. It's frustrating because there are so many "diets" or ways of eating that are all very different, all seem to have great benefits but they don't work the same for everyone, so we have to try them out and see what works best, which means more time spent testing and not necessarily losing anything. I've already cut pasta out of my diet, and my partner and I were eating 3 loaves of bread between us a week as well as 1 big block of cheese and 1 tub of margarine. Toast or sandwiches were our meals most days. Now that we've reduced our bread consumption to 1 loaf a week, 1 tub of margarine lasts 2 weeks and we barely go through half a block of cheese in a week since I rarely have bread anymore. I don't trust my body and the signals its sending me. Because it tells me im hungry a lot after I've just eaten, or that I want to eat sweets, cakes, chocolates, pastries, ice cream. Sometimes even when I'm full, my brain is telling me to eat more... its a constant battle but one I've been winning so far. But the problem is Im not losing as much weight as I thought I would be. Considering how bad my diet used to be, and how drastically I have changed my eating habits I thought cutting out or drastically reducing the amount of sugar and bread/pasta I was consuming would result in huge weight loss, but it hasn't. So that's why I'm looking for other ways of losing weight, because I'm not convinced that weight loss is as simple as calories in vs calories out anymore. This site and its members are helping to motivate me though, so I feel inspired to continue to try whatever I can to get down to my goal weight. ^_^

What you are doing now is a step in the right direction, You've decided to take action and you've come on here - so actually, that's two steps in the right direction :-) Try not to be too disheartened if you don't lose as much as you like...who ever does really?? haha. As long as you just keep on keeping on then you'll soon see those figures start moving in the right direction. Because my diet is so restricted, I've read a lot about what's out there, and I don't think you have to worry about starvation mode unless you go for prolonged periods (as in days or weeks) without eating, or eating very little. I'd definitely speak to your doctor if I were you, if fasting is the way to go then maybe 12 hours might be better to start with. I gain and lose the same 10kg all the time and I know what you mean about eating when you are full...in fact, when I am in that 'zone' I don't actually feel full and can just eat and eat and eat. If you are looking for other ways to lose weight other than cals in v cals out, I'm sure you will get lots of good advice on here. I can give you mine too, again it's what I know works for me so take from it what feels good for you: 1, cut out soft drinks (even diet), if you don't like plain water (I don't), have a drop of sugar free cordial. Cottees sugar free raspberry keep me happy. 2. Try to drink a few different hot drinks through the day, I have a green tea (hated it at first), a peppermint tea and a lemon and ginger tea through the day, it's a good way to get extra water into you and you will probably find you don't need the sugar. 3. As well as tracking cals, carbs, protein etc on here, also select the option to track your sodium. RDI is 2300mg or lower and if you're having more, you could be retaining water which is why you're not seeing the loss you expect. 4. Ditch the margarine and splash out on some real butter. You're mouth and gut will thank you for it. 5. make sure you're getting your RDI fruit and veg - your skin will look amazing after a few weeks of this and increased water. 6. Most important for me....all this is worthless without exercise, it's just got to happen - everyday, even if it's just a half hour walk. Don't think of exercise as an 'extra' that you haven't got time for, make it part of your day naturally. Get up 15 mins earlier, walk to the shops, take the dogs for a quick 20 mins, go catch those pokemon :-) xxx

Thanks for the advice Justine. My next checkup is coming up soon so I will bring up the diets I have in mind with my doctor and see what she recommends. I forget to drink water and am always thirsty, I drink jasmine tea quite a bit though. I've had a sore throat the past few days though so have been drinking camomile with honey instead. I might give the flavour infused water a try though. I think my sodium intake is a bit too high. Although I don't add salt to my meals usually FS has recorded me having anywhere from 3.6k to 4k plus sodium a day. I don't know how much you're typically supposed to have but that seems like a big number. I'm scared butter will clog my arteries. =( I'm a fruit fanatic, but I eat it like I used to eat sweets and so I have to try and not eat them all within a couple of days of doing the groceries lol. >.< Yes I have to start exercising. I'll be trying to do as much as I can every hour on my elliptical and will take the pups to my local park for a walk too. I feel so much more motivated when I have people to work out with so I've posted in the forums hoping to find others near me who want to start a walking group. Fingers crossed. If not I'll start with my elliptical. Lol yes! I still gotta catch em all. xD
