I’m going to try cutting out processed sugar for the new year, except for special occasions and even then, I’ll try to take it easy. I have the worst sweet tooth ever and it’ll be hard! Does anyone have any tips or tricks to wean myself off?

I use stevia for coffee etc., although some people feel it's better to avoid anything sweet altogether.

I was doing well stopping below the 6 tsp recommended limit for a long time, but seriously slipped in the last few months. I just upgraded to FS premium in part to a create a custom "meal" to track foods with added sugars. Determined to do better. I think the big thing to remember is that your taste buds WILL adjust if you stick to it

I love my fruits and my yogurt! I know yogurt has processed sugar in it but I only have one day, if that.

I also use stevia as a substitute. Pure Protein birthday cake bars or Built Puff bars to satisfy mega cravings.

Have you tried getting plain yogurt and adding your own sugar? That's what I do. A pre-packaged yogurt typically has 4 teaspoons of sugar in it, but I find that with some fruit, a teaspoon is more than enough. If you decide you want to stick with the pre-packaged, completely your choice. Do be aware of how much you're getting from those, though

Don’t bring it into your house, for starters, and avoid the bakery section in the grocery store. The healthiest way to beat the processed sugar problem is to switch to fresh fruit. Like @Wyo mentioned, your taste buds will adapt so long as you avoid sugar substitutes like Splenda.

I made a post the other day about the best way to store fresh fruit for longer so it looks like I’ll be picking up some mason jars and loads of fruit! Does anyone know how long fresh fruit can stay frozen for? What about veggies?

Good idea!

We are all different but for me cold Turkey was the only way to go. Moderation just didn’t work. After about a month I stopped craving sugar. Healthier foods taste better now. For some people treats every now and then work but for me that makes it harder. Just play around with what works for you.

What fruits do you have?

@liv001, none at the moment. Gotta go grocery shopping.

I would not buy too much unless you have to. Veggies can freeze but often lose their crunch. Fruits can be hard to freeze. Some like berries freeze very well. But get soft when thawed. Maybe google the kinds you like and see what they suggest

I'm using swerve! it's amazing! I used to use 6 rounded teaspoons of sugar in 2 coffees! I only ate sweet and salty snacky snacks for breakfast lunch and well snacks, then dinner. I know the struggle! I've lost most of my weight from cutting the sugar and (junk) snacks out

Anglecullen333, was it really hard to do?

I went the cold turkey route in March. It wasn't easy as I also have a wicked sweet tooth. i viewed it as short term pain for long term gain. As a chronically obese person, I had a bunch of comorbidities at the time - stroke level hypertension, high cholesterol. My choice came down to did I want to have a life, better yet a quality of life, or was that hit of sugar worth more than my own well being. So I cleared my house of all temptation and avoided the goodie aisles at the store. It took a while, but the palate changes. These days, fruit (excluding bananas and limited oranges) are my go tos. I chase seasonal items - for a while it was strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, then cherries peaches and nectarines, more recently different kinds of apples as well as whatever fruit is on sale (lately canteloupe). I've also found that most prefabricated food now tastes like it is loaded down with sigar. Read the label and it usually is. Not easy, but doable and well worth it as almost immediately inflammation decreased substantially.

You might look up your local extension office for advice on freezing fruits and veggies.

The thing is, all of my blood and lab work comes back good! My blood pressure is good, my blood work is good, everything is at the levels they should be at! I’m just fat and I know a good chunk of it is my sweet tooth.

Just cut them out of your diet completely. The first 5-7 days will be difficult (daily cravings and headaches). After 4-5 weeks, you will feel amazing.

Rfox -- you are wise to address this issue BEFORE your health goes downhill. The effects of obesity often don't hit until after many years, but it catches up. I had perfect bloodwork at my heaviest so I figured my weight wasn't a problem, but in hindsight, I was in denial. That said, I strongly encourage you to focus more on health than on the scale. I know precious few people who truly eat healthy in reasonable portions who struggle with weight
