Went to DexaFit to get DEXA scan and 3D body measurement as I was curious how far of my home smart scale was.
DEXA scan says 20% BF, SBF 19.1 lb, 138 lb lean mass.
After turning off athlete mode on scale: BF 18.7%, SBF 16.6%. 2-5 - 3% diff.

Thanks Erin and Kim. Kim there is a lot of guess work in weight loss and body recomposition. There are a lot of inaccurate scales and such out there too. As we lose weight we are usually losing fat and lean mass at the same time. But, that is OK. Now that I am getting close to my goal with each pound lost I am curious as to how much is fat and how much is lean mass I am losing. If I am just losing lean mass and not fat, I need to rethink my strategies. DEXA is the best and most trusted measurement device for this for commercial use. :)

My father passed the week of my scheduled Dexa back in December. I wasn't able to go and lost that $80. Have you done other methods? I've read that the Dexa can be very inaccurate. I know that there isn't an accurate way without dissecting the body. However, I would like to try Dexa and Dunking to compare with calipers.

Hey Daddy, I just have my smart scale and home caliper test kit. There is an error range in any testing. The 100% most accurate would be as you said to fillet all the fat off a body and weigh it separately. Lol DEXA does have an error rate of course. But, it is better than any other testing. 3% I think. The water buoyancy test might be close for total body fat. But, it isn’t going to be able to tell you the visceral fat amount which is the most important. The visceral fat (internal fat around the organs) is what is so dangerous for our overall health. DEXA I think is the only way to get a somewhat accurate measurement for visceral fat. Also, DEXA was originally designed to measure bone density. So, with DEXA you also get the bone density measurements which tells you if you are at risk for osteoporosis! I scored good on that too. So, I was happy about that as I am over 50 now. Hope this helps. (I am no expert. Just repeating all I have read which is quite a bit.)

I think the best way for me, is compare it to a bf image chart. I doubt any of us want a certain bf without the look that comes with it lol say if the machine measures you at 12% and you look 18%. Would it satisfy you to be at twelve for the sake of being at 12 when you look 18? Atleast it’s my reason for cutting fat. It’s to look like a 10-12% from the bf image chart.

Hey gainz, as Diablo pointed out, different people can look different in the mirror with same levels of BF. Looking at pics online I also thought I was lower than I really am. Guess I store less fat on the abs than some people. For me, it isn’t as much aesthetics. I am mainly in it to just to be healthier and feel better. Around 10%-12% BF is where I would like to get to and stay. I would love to gain more muscle mass and get stronger. But, that is a secondary goal.

Yea if you’re looking for health. I’ve been in the 11-12. And if you ask me, aesthetics aside I felt the best between 14-18. Not that I was feeling bad it’s just I felt just as good but stronger overall. For health wise lower does not mean better. I wish I didn’t care about aesthetics, cuz then I would be finished cutting lol

Lol Gainz. Just so you know where this all started for me… I love playing basketball with my grandson because he loves it so much. He just turned 13 and is very good at it. He is only around 5’3” right now but can jump super high for his size. Last year we started going to LA Fitness because they have an indoor court. He says to me very often ”you are 6 feet tall. You should be able to dunk. Why can’t you dunk. Lol” Last year I told him, well I am 50, kind of fat, and have weak leg muscles from sitting in a desk all day. I told him when I was 18, I could grab the rim but never dunk. So, I started losing fat to see if I could increase my vertical. Then I realized just how weak my legs really have become. So, I started tracking the weight loss and lifting with the primary goal of trying to get back to that rim 33 years later to impress him. 😂🤣😂🤣 So, that is another driving factor for losing as much fat as I can. As they say, “fat don’t fly.” 🤣😂🤣

Oh yea, then dropping fits your goal. You might want to train quarter squats too it improves jumping with more force production. But yea a decade or 2 ago lol I use to work with this skinny kid and he could jump so high that it looked like he jumped and jumped again while I’m the air

I am actually considering stopping most of the upper body lifting and focusing only on lower body just to make sure I am not adding more weight I have to push up off the floor while jumping. 😆🤷

Lol gainz! Yea skinny gets you up in the air if the leg strength is there. Just look at Ja Morant fly!! Thanks for the advice! I read that not long ago about the quarter squats. I am going to start that next leg day. 😀
