I hear a lot of not so good things about the Atkins diet.. Kinda scares me.. Do I continue on this..More heart disease.. Ketosis.. All I want to do is lose weight in a healthy way and be healthy again.

Enrolling on the Atkins site and learning about this way of eating is a smart choice. When you read the data and actually examine what you're eating it is difficult to even begin to think that it is an unhealthy way to eat. No refined sugar, no white flour, lots of vegetables, whole full fats... It's tough to come up with a healthier plan. :) This is a great site for support and encouragement, and for learning. Good luck to you in your weight loss journey!

My friend (FlowerDude on FS) has lost over 90 lbs on Atkins and I'm following his example. He had his blood tested last week and all levels are normal, including cholesteral. He is of of his BP meds too. Atkins means lots of veggies and meat. Some cheese is allowed but it's not a free for all. You can make it fatty meat or you can choose leaner cuts. There is nothing unhealthy about Atkins..IF you are doing it correctly atkins is totally sustainable and a very healthy choice. If you haven't done so already pick up the books and read them, go to the atkins website and read that, get involved in the forums there and read some of the forum topics here about atkins. I know some of the members have had great success with atkins (JSfantome, Flowerdude, ctlss and PeeFat are a few I know there are more but I cannot think of the names off the top of my head) You still get your fruits and veggies (I don't think fruit is part of induction but I know there are tons of foundation veggies), meat (there are other forms of protein out there too) the only thing you genereally miss out on is Alcohol (which is bad anyways), sugar (again bad anyways) and starchy carbs like potatoes and bread and pasta and there are alternatives out there. I am not sure where you heard all of this bad stuff. Really you are the only person that can make the choice but if you are serious about Atkins than read the newest book, and go to the site. There are bad things out there about pretty much any diet (low - fat, low-cal, low-carb, calorie count) the thing to remember is what ever choice you make stick with it, give it an honest try before switching it up. If you want a look at other lower carb type diets there is the spike diet (I know a few members here that do it) or there is the primal blue print, and if you want calorie counting is just as good as anything - the key with it is to eat AT least 1200 cals a day.

I think this is a very healthy way to go..so many people have been very successful, but like any diet it is what works for you. When people ask me how I am losing weight and I say Atkins they say oh I can't eat that much meat. Well that is not the case at all I only have 4 - 6oz of meat with my meal, plenty of veggies and salads. In fact lots of people struggle to eat the amount of veggies required. I do think that you have to get the book and go on the web site like those above say. Learn how to do it correctly. If you have any questions there are so many people on here to help you out. You certainly have nothing to lose trying it out and see how you are doing. Don't forget as well when you first start you may get the "Atkins Flu" if you read the web site you will be prepared. I wish you all the best and hope you enjoy the Atkins way of life as much as I do.

Atkins has worked wonders for me. I am so much healthier than I was 3 months ago. I dont know if you have any health issues. So I guess I would suggest what the others have and if you havent read the book and make sure it is something that would fit for you. I get hungry on calorie restricted diets with carbs. The fat, meat and veggies allowed on low carb are wonderful and needed for a healthy body. How can sensibly eating more whole natural foods and less processed be bad for you? Just my opinion. Definitely do research on positive also before choosing.

"Unhealthy" is when people just eat nothing but meat, cheese, and eggs. If you actually follow the plan, there is nothing unhealthy about it. It's people's own versions that they make up that causes issues.

You have for sure had a lot of comment on this subject. I second and third each and everyone!!! All of them are 100% right. You will NEVER EVER be sorry u gave it a chance. And YES Atkins is the healthiest diet there is to eat and lose weight on. THIS WOE, (way of eating) is so very healthy!!! The ones that have planted bad things about this WOE in your mind are folks that have never taken the time to research Atkins!!! I weighed 240-plus when I started in March. Today I weigh 196! I have no idea how much u weight, or how much u would like to weigh, but I say this again, you will never ever be sorry u got one this WOE!!! One thing I must stress!! You can not cheat on this diet. If you do you will undo all you have done for a couple of weeks after you cheated!! I'm 60 years old. I have seen women and men way older than I am get on Atkins and all they do is thank the good LORD they found the right path to weight loss. I was having to use 2 different kinds of insulin when I got on Atkins and I have had to use it one time since I started. I cheated and ate KFC... I have a fridge full of insulin. I also think its about time I go to my doctor because I think she may need to take me off some, if not all my blood pressure meds!!! I take 2 different kinds of that med. also!! I just had to but my 2 cents out there...marylouise

If you're concerned about it being healthy, then do what the others have suggested & read your Atkins book to make sure you are following it correctly. If you do that, then you will be the shining example to prove to all those uneducated people telling you it's unhealthy they are misinformed.

I like to think of Atkins as the caveman type diet. Back then there was no processed anything. They ate meat (if they could kill it) and ate off the land (fruits/veggies/eggs/olives) Things that naturally grown. These are the foods humans are meant to be eating, not processed foods full of chemicals (which is 80% of the choices now in the American diet)
