I made a "new" salad today. I've never had Kale or fresh Seaweed. I made a salad with kale, spinach, romaine, seaweed, cucumbers, celery, yellow pepper and a couple of cherry tomatoes. When I went onto the website, I couldn't find a salad that fit the description. There was one--lettuce with veggies, but it said it was only 11 calories for one cup. That doesn't sound right to me. I think it's a lot more calories than that. I know, I should have used my new scale and weighed everything!

I was reading a couple of articles on Kale. There's pro's and con's. Eat it raw vs cooked. I'm a little concerned about the "cons," of course. They say Kale promotes clotting, it's been associated with both kidney and gallstones. It can suppress thyroid function and cause bloating, gas. It won't do this when cooked. I guess this is the last time I'll be eating it raw since I have a thyroid problem and that's my whole idea for eating fresh seaweed and taking Kelp. I need to read up on things more before trying them. Here, I thought I was being healthy eating raw Kale--LOL.

I do know one person who got a kidney stone and he ate lots of kale...BUT he also drank a lot of soda!

You can go into the cook book category and "add", name, list ingredients and amounts used, and it will give you the calorie count and access to put it in your food diary for today. I have LOTS of them listed. You are welcome to look through them.

Being a person that has had both kidney and gallstones, I can tell you that spinach has high concentrations of oxylates. Kale also has them, but I will take the spinach over kale any day of the week. As far as the kidney stones go, you only need to worry about the oxylates if that is the compound that your body doesn't metabolize. If you get kidney stones from something else, then you should be ok.

SheaDlady-Thank you so much!

HCB--I'm a little leary of eating it raw now. I am going to pick it all out of the salad and cook it. Cooked Kale is supposed to be okay.

Disrig. I have a really bad thyroid problem, so eating it raw is out of the question now (it suppresses thyroid function). I'll still eat it cooked. I never thought eating healthy could be so complicated--LOL. Drinking some peppermint tea now!

Drags--it really was! I have to admit, the Kale was easy to get through. The Seaweed was a little more difficult because of the texture and salty (I rinsed the salt off) taste. I keep telling myself that's lunch tomorrow--LOL.

Drags--They say you should only use raw Kale twice a week for juicing. Seaweed is really good, but research it before taking it. A lot of these types of foods are very good for you, but at the same time, you have to be careful. Seaweed has a lot Iodine in it, which is good for your thyroid, but too much can have an adverse effect. If you eat raw kale, then you be careful if you are on any anticoagulants (Coumadin, Warfarin). So funny, because I think I'm being healthy, but finding out I have to make sure I don't eat too much of something or it can be bad. I LOVE this new market! They have all kinds of foods to try (fresh, produce, boxed, bottled--you named it!)--Asian, Spanish, Turkish, Chinese, Japanese--all kinds of things I've never heard of (even in the produce and fish section)--LOL.

Okay, I looked for a salad that was close to what I ate today, because I know my salad was more than 11 calories. I didn't way mine, so my calories for lunch won't be exact, but they will be "close." I saw one that had a lot of the same ingredients I used and it was about 33 calories. I'm not even worried if it was more since I haven't eaten anything else today. Just not hungry (still have a cold). Sipping peppermint tea from the Farmer's Market (I think this one is Chinese!).

I've never juiced. Is that instead of meals for the entire day or just for one meal?

That sounds like a great idea for breakfast--or even lunch!

Heads up ... QVC online was offering the Vitamix in 6 payments and it was the newer under the counter model and it's quieter. I just got mine and it stays on the counter! It juices up leafy greens .... ice ... to a smooth snowy texture. :) I cook my Kale but the baby Kale isn't too bad mixed with other greens. I think we all need to not eat too much of any one thing. I love spinach raw, cooked, in smoothies or salads or even canned. Popeye is my hero. LOL!

I have a perfectly good Oster and it makes fantastic smoothies but I will say that putting in raw veggies and not worrying about the bulk ... and the creamy snow when I add ice .... it's worth it. We're putting the Oster in the RV for making "potent tropical drinks" when at the beach. :)

I think that new Mega Ninja is a cheaper alternative. I came very close to buying that one.
