Guys, I've been overwhelmed by your messages today!

I think I just haven't really got a grasp of how to connect properly in this site, but today has shown me that it is worth the effort, so thank you all.

A big problem I'm having during lockdown is that there is so much food at easy reach - both because I'm working from home and moreso because we're keeping stocks intentionally high in case hubby is unable to go shopping at some point, God forbid. Combine that with the fact I'm an emotional eater with a sweet tooth and a low fat diet due to gallstones and there you have the full picture of what a mess I am!

I've been at this malarky for most of my adult life and I know the science. What I don't know is how to control my constant desire to eat. More often than not I'm hungry, but that's not an excuse really.

I want so much more for myself, but I have to get over this hurdle first of all. If I can get to 13st, that will bring with it a huge amount of self confidence and drive to get more from life.

All advice appreciated and considered.

it's not easy to stray with so many temptations at home, I found I put on 20kg gradually due to a lack of exercise and eating the same amount of food, I was absolutely shocked at how many calories all the little snacks added up to, the odd biscuit here, pack of crisps there and a chocolate bar over a day doesn't seem much but that's probably 400 calories, flat iron steak and salad is about the same ! I found cutting down on my snacks and starting a gentle exercise routine that I can do daily and choosing healthier meals helped me a lot , find some ideas for healthier snacks so you don't have to deny yourself a treat, I'm seeing this as a life style change so it has to be something that I can live with day in day out.

Yeah, healthy snacks are tricky on a low fat diet. I can't eat peanut butter or nuts in general. Cereal bars & oatcakes are too high but I'll have them occasionally. All I'm really left with is melba toast, fat free yoghurt and fruits! So on top of that I eat a lot of sweet stuff. Soreen, jelly babies, swizzels lolly pops.... So bad for my teeth! Not to mention I'm genetically inclined to develop type 2 diabetes so I should be trying so much harder to avoid it!

My type 2 finally caught up to me last year, due to a lack of exercise and my poor diet. You should cut down on the sweets if you're at a higher risk. Apart from cutting out snacks I've been calorie counting and starting some exercises but not really following any particular type of diet, is there a reason you have to be on a low fat diet?

I’ve been snacking so much more since I’m working from home too, I’ve gained 8lb in two months!! I have a cup of tea mid-morning if I feel I want a snack, the cravings are still there though! So I understand how hard it is!! My problem is bingeing when I’m bored and need a break from the computer! You could try having a cup of tea and a calorie-counted snack like snack-a-jacks or those pressed fruit bars? Or a mini pack of Jaffa cakes? Good luck!

My secret to not eating snacks is not to buy them and replace the urge by drinking sugar free orange squash each time I feel like having something sweet. It is hard at first not having treats but worth it in the end.

I am a crisp addict could eat my body weight of them 🤣 I literally don’t buy them now then I can’t eat them ! After the first week didn’t really think about them - if I get a week moment get a bag of lentil curls - now I’ve noticed not bought ANY form of crisp for 6 weeks - I’m no saint so have my moments work 1 day 2 day etc and before you know it 1 week down ! The fact your on the forum means your thinking the right way ! x

Hi Ali, so glad to see this message! Yes, the pandemic situation has been really terribly difficult especially for dieters! You can’t really avoid stocking up, and you can’t escape the house either. I too have a sweet tooth so it’s hard when there are so many crave-foods within reach. I think some of the below comments had the right idea - it’s good habit to find a substitute food for your cravings. Personally, whenever I want something sweet, I drink milky tea with sweetener/sometimes sugar, and supplement it with a piece of chocolate when I am feeling really low. However, I understand this can be really difficult so please remember we are all here for you and support you the whole way! Hopefully you can find what works for you! X

Hi Ali, I'm so glad uv decided to stick with it ❤️ I am a 'grazer' too and find it hard. Quarantine has meant that I am not in a shop every day, when I do go I have been buying healthier versions, salt n vinegar Snack a Jack's or Kallo rice cakes have been a brilliant alternative to crisps and when I'm craving sweet things I have been making or buying ice lollies or diluting juice with lots of ice cubes,,kinda tricks ur mind into thinking ur eating when ur crunching ice and the extra water curbs ur hunger.Everyone has treat days, don't beat yourself up about it, the fact that ur still here and reaching out is a big step, well done👏👏

To help with the constant hunger, never drink fizzy drinks, drink plenty water and most importantly...distraction, distraction, distraction. Do this and the cravings will pass. Keep up it pal 👍

Hi Ali! I was talking to a doctor the other day and they told me something useful, which is that cravings typically only last for 15 minutes in the brain, so if you can distract yourself for that long it will pass. Adjusting fully to a big change takes time, but we’re here to support you 🤗

When I had my gall bladder out, I came round from the op feeling absolutely brilliant. No it wasn't morphine! I felt suddenly well and realised I hadn't been for a long time. It really is worth losing the weight just to get the op and never have to worry about gallstones ever again. Good luck and keep going!

I second what nutrical said re the 15 mins, I was told the same by a dietician and low and behold it’s true, just distract yourself for 15-20mins, you’ll do it 👍

polymerclayer, that is so great to hear! I don't think my weight now would stop me getting the op, but I would be more confident about recovering well if I could lose a bit of weight beforehand. The 15 minute thing is definitely something I will try. I will combine with the idea of taking a sugar free drink. Sounds like a winning combination!
