Day 3 of Low Carb High Fat. Ok, this is surprising, I didn't really believe that eating this much could actually help me lose weight. I'm still not 100% convinced, although I really want it to be true. This is so much easier than the starvation I was doing and still not losing. The only thing that really convinced me to try it is that there is so much science supporting it, plus one of my close friends did it, along with CrossFit, and she went from a fabulous size 8 to a stunning size 4. Well, she used to be my friend, I don't like her that much now (kidding, Marsha)

I guess it is time for me to start weight training. I read yesterday that what we think of as "burning calories," does not reduce us nearly as well as lifting weights. If we really want to permanently change our metabolism, we have to have a lot of muscle. A very muscular friend of mine went from 230 lbs to 175 lbs 5 years ago, and since he keeps his muscle tone so strong, he can eat what he wants. That was not true when he weighed 230.

I've been hiking almost every day. I love having my dog with me, but sometimes she makes it harder. I found that if I use trekker poles, I walk faster, stand up straighter, breathe better and get an upper body workout going downhill by supporting more of my weight on my hands. Holding a leash makes this more difficult. I want my dog to be in shape, too, but she's been misbehaving, tried to attack another dog yesterday. I had her on a leash, so I was able to stop her. And then there is the poo...I had to carry it back quite a ways yesterday (in a bag of course!). Weigh all that with the guilt of leaving her behind...

I'm always amazed at how little you eat even though it feels like you're eating a ton. I've been on it for almost a week now and I'm getting to a point where I notice myself not wanting to snack anymore.

I've eaten so little for so long, that it feels like I'm pigging out everyday. I've doubled my calories, and now the scale is moving downward. Weird. It's so hard to let go of traditional wisdom on weight loss. Even though I don't believe the "calories in - calories out" myth, it's so deeply ingrained I find myself thinking in those terms. But when I look at the truth...I've been eating under 1000 calories/day and walking about an hour up and down hills with no recent weight loss...I can believe it.

Damn, That is cool. I also believe that once you build muscle you burn your calories much more efficiently. I am doing cardio now but ultimately I will add more strength training...maybe some kettlebells.

I struggle with the poochy issue too. My compromise is taking him for his own walk and then do my own more intense exercise. Mine misbehaves by eating the deer poop-he thinks it's chocolate truffles or something! EWWW

I don't mean to sound like Debbie-Downer here... yes there is science behind it and as long as you burn like DFW does it will probably work for you BUT.... watch your cholseterol. My sister followed adkins for years and went to a size 4 but after going to the doctor and having her annual screen she realized that she had to be able to do it but not over do the fats and cholsterol. Her doc was really alarmed so she remained on the diet but limited her fat intake and went for more lean proteins. Next screen 6 months later was a huge difference. Just a thought :-).

And FYI, no way I could take my dog lol! Now and then but not if he's really full of energy. Ever see the dog in UP? That's my Mack... SQUIRREL!! And he's a hound so any cat, bunny, squirrel or bird and he's off! Good for him he's handsome as hell :-)

Have you read Good Calories, Bad Calories? It was the nail in the coffin for the fat and cholesterol theory for me, and also a ton of motivation to change the way I ate. Cesar Milan has some really good info online about dogs...good luck!

Hildi - I agree, you need muscle to speed up metabolism...weight training is my next major change. Lindsay - mine has been eating any flavor poo she can find...horse, dog, coyote. thynes - since dropping my carbs, my cholesterol has dropped 37 points. But there is science that says that cholesterol is not a marker for heart disease, or any disease. And it also says that carbs are the culprit for heart disease, not saturated fat. Bri - Last year, I read Taubes second book, Why We Get Fat, and it also changed my thinking about calories and burning them and fat and carbs and cholesterol. Right now I am reading The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living. Same stuff, different doctor. It's so hard to let go of the "calories in - calories out" mentality, even when I know it's wrong.

Oh I'm with you on the carbs 100%!! It was just a thought, as long as your bad cholesterol is healthy then keep on, keepin on :-). Everyones body is different and it was just the one experience I knew of, her good cholesterol was great but her bad was out of control. My dad has gout and kidney stones issues as does most of my family so we watch it due to the corilation between high cholesterol and uric acid levels. Hell knows I'm no doctor and have never had chelsterol issue so what do I know ;-). I agree that it is SO MUCH MORE than cals in vs cals out. I was low cal but never watched my macros and put on weight. Ditched a lot of the carbs after reading books by Michael Pollan (Clean eating) as well as Why We Get Fat. As my weight has dropped I have had to change my eating often. I find that I'm a middle of the roader, for those that know Atkins I say I'm a between phase 2 and 3 for lifer. Have you ever looked at the Blood Type Diet? I know a few people that have compared their type to what works for them and a lot of the time it's been erie how close it is. As long as you are feeling good and you and your body have come to an agreement then that is AWESOME!!! Can't wait to hear more about your journey.

Bri - looked at your days eating and I love all the healthy fats! Everytime I try to not worry about the healthy ones I blow up. Jealous!

My 2c advise to you is to keep on doing what's right for you. As for Cholesterol...well it should be a concern only under 2 conditions: Condition 1: You believe that Total Cholesterol has anything to do with your health. Before you jump in and say "Yes I do" it might be helpful to remember that even the researcher who managed to be the first to test Cholesterol declared that it is absolutely worthless as a biomarker. He went on to discover ways to test for the Cholesterol fractions. Condition 2: You believe that Cholesterol will give you an heart attack. That's has exactly zero scientifically basis and even after 40 years and a few hundred million $ later nobody has ever been able to show a direct causation between Cholesterol and heart diseases. If you don't believe me (and it would be a good thing to develop a bit of skepticism with anything associated to nutrition and health) go and check the WHO 2010 report on Cholesterol and mortality, the numbers are spread all over the place. But if you are really concerned than all you have to do is take your Triglycerides number and divide it by your HDL Cholesterol number. Less than 2? You are going to live forever. Between 2-4? Hmm...that's normal. More than 4? So sorry.

I'm having a lipids panel done tomorrow by a friend who runs clinics at places of employment. I'll do the math to see if I'll be around for my great great great grandchildren. I've never worried about cholesterol, when it was 212, my doctor actually wanted to put me on meds. I gave her an emphatic NO, and then changed to low carb and it went down to 178. My grandmother lived to be 98 with high cholesterol, she weighed 85 lbs (yes, two digits), and never had heart disease. So there, who needs science when you have anecdotes.

It's not so anecdotal as you might think. Even the AHA acknowledge that for women over 55, high Cholesterol is not a risk factor for CVD. It's also not a risk factor for anyone above 70, In fact, you have better chances to piss on your grandchildren graves if you are old and have a high cholestreol.
